13 yr old w/ chest/neck pain

I am very concerned about my daughter.  She is very athletic and over the past year has been having occassional issues w/ sudden chest pains.  Last night the pain radiated to her neck.  She NEVER misses practices unless she is REALLY ill and she couldn't go last night.  We called the on call physician and she said it sounded like pluerisy.  However this has happened before and these pains seem to subside after she rests for a while.  What should I do???

i can almost assure you that it is pre-cordial catch syndrome or costchondritis...probably more explainable at her age

She is going to a Pediatric Cardiologist Monday morning.  I am scared to death!  However, optimistic.  She is still developing so we are leaning more toward the muscluloskeletal issues.

The pain starts slightly left of the breast bone and radiates up her neck.  No numbness though.  The pains also tend to go away after resting for a while and come on at random times.  But like I said she is EXTREMELY athletic and involved in HIGH levels of soccer, basketball and track.  I have read horror stories about kids dropping dead on the fields unexpectedIy.  I will definitely look up those things you mentioned.  Thank you very much!

well this is serious, you may need to get your daughter an Echocardiogram to rule out congenital heart disease, it could be some sort of septal defect, it affects about 1 in 1,000 kids and teens in the US each year, if it happens to where the pain radiates again take her to the ER they need to get her hooked up to an electrocardiograph and ensure that nothing is wrong with her heart...the way this heart defects symptoms come into play are shortness of breath, lightheadedness, fatigue, accelerated or very slow heart rate...( tachycardia or bradycardia)....changes in blood pressure and chest pains that radiate to arms or neck. on the other hand it could be musculoskeletal especially if she is developing breasts right now...it can cause strain on the costosternal and costchondral joints...look up Pre-cordial catch syndrome, costochondritis, and slipping rib syndrome... write me back with exact location of pain...if it radiates tell me where, and any additional symptoms whether you think they would be involved or not this is very important in key to finding diagnosis
