Thyroid removed and can't sleep??!!!

Hello,
I had enlarged goitre and my thyroid was removed. The surgery was Nov 11th, and it went very well. I was released from hospital the next day. Except for a lack of energy I was fine for the next couple of days I was fine. The surgeon put me on Caltrade w/ vitamin D when I was released from the hospital. After the couple of days I can't sleep, I feel as if I was losing my mind, lack of energy. I went to my doctor and he put me on sleeping pills....I really don't want to take these but I need to sleep. I had a follow-up visit with the surgeon on 24th and he put on .125 mg synthroid...I have been taking these in the morning plus the Caltrade D about 4 hours later. I still have tremendous difficulty sleeping and an emotional mess, feeling sad / depressed, my mind is going crazy.

I have a visit with my endo on the 30th

I never had problems sleeping or napping during the day before this surgery.....always consider my self normal and healthy, except for the enlarged goitre.

Do anyone know why I am experiencing these issues or have anyone experience any of these? Is this normal?

Make sure the doc tests and treats the FT3 levels. Some docs only treat FT4, and you may not be converting enough of your T4 hormone to T3, in which case, a drug like Cytomel (T3 drug), added to your Synthroid (T4 drug) can make all the difference.

I am on Cytomel now, just a low dose at 5 mcg, and it has given me an edge that I hadn't felt before.

Also, are you taking the Synthroid on an empty stomach in the morning, with nothing but a full glass of water, then waiting an hour to eat or drink coffee? Milk and food can interfere with absorption.

Yes, this happens to people while they struggle to find the right thyroid dosage. Please post your recent FT4/FT3 numbers for us, so we can better answer your question. Your doctor's nurse has these numbers and you have the right to get them.
