Afraid to take Synthroid

I have an enlarged thyroid, I've been tested several times for thyroid function always returned normal.  Today I finally visit the Endocronologist for the first time, after 3 months of testing by the surgeon.

The endo told me, my thyroid is working normal, and feels confident my thyroid is not enlarged due to my thyroid gland or hormone imbalance, but something else, possibly medication, allegies, etc....

He prescribed me synthroid (Levothyroixine) .075 MG this morning, to reduce my swollen thyroid, requested by the surgeon, to avoid surgery.  The surgeon wants to reduce the swelling by medication first, if it doesn't work, then he is going to remove half my thyroid, that is making my airway crooked.

The endo said, because my thyroid function tests are normal, if the medication makes me jittery, nervous, heart palps, hyperthyroid. Then stop taking the med, my system is producing too much hormone, from normal levels.

In the meantime, the endo is going to do further testing for thyroid inflammation, antibodies, they drew more blood this morning, and I return to the endo in 2 months for follow up.  He is going to figure out what caused my thyroid to enlarge, biopsy on 3 nodules are benign.

Reason I am afraid to take the synthroid is, the endo is confident it will not help, reduce the swelling of my thyroid, cause my hormones is not the problem.  He feels together we can figure out what caused it to swell.  He wants me to keep track of allergies, medications etc....  He said allergies could be causing my thyroid to enlarge.

Question I have is, has anyone had normal thyroid function levels, taken synthroid to reduce thyroid swelling ??

Has anyone had a swollen thyroid, normal thyroid function tests and have symptoms of hypo/hyper ?

Thanks for any help, I'm just so afraid of not doing the right thing, by taking the med.  The endo doesn't want me to take the med but prescribed it, the surgeon wants me to take the med to reduce swelling, avoid complicated surgery, or surgery for no reason other then my thyroid is enlarged causing mild discomfort, while thyroid is working normal.

Thank you for sharing.  I have hypothyroid symptoms, I'm always tired, sleepy tired.  Guess only way I'll know if the med helps is to take it.

My goiter is large internally not very visible on the exterior of my throat, airway is shaped like a C on an X-ray.  It's not effecting my breathing or swallowing, just discomfort, I can always feel it.  A lump in the throat.
The surgeon doesn't want to remove my thyroid because it's functioning normal at the moment, but if it really starts to obstruct my airway, then he's going to remove the half that's causing it. Once again thanks.

your tsh is jsut a tad high and that may be why the endo wants to put you on synthroid. when I had my goiter my thyroid test came out "normal" but I ma pretty sure I was hypothryoid.I had all the classic symptomsplus a tennis ball sized goiter tht had dropped below my sternum. If the goiter is causing you to not breathe right or is compressing your esophagus It may be better to opt for the surgery.I do know the med can stop the goiter from growing but it wont shrink it.
Of course you will doecide what is best for you. get a second opinion from another endo and research, research, research. dont let it big like mine  and have to get your sternum cut open to get it out.
