At what point is RAI suggested?

I am 33 years old and was diagnosed with Graves about 2 years ago. I was just about to begin a family and so instead of doing RAI I began taking PTU. I now have a healthy 5 month old and get my TSH levels checked every 3 months. I have only been taking 25 mg daily and 4 months ago was normal. All of a sudden I noticed a drop in my milk supply and started gaining weight instead of losing it like I had been. My new blood test results say that I am now totally hypothyroid. I have stopped the PTU but am concerned now about now being able to build my milk supply back up. I am in the process of correcting this with some hormone therapy but was wondering how long I would have to deal with this. At some point I would think RAI would be the best decision, however; I still want another child and I now have a baby that I am the sole caretaker for. How long do you have to be away from children after RAI is done? Can I get pregnant again? Do I wait until I am done having children to get RAI and just continue taking the medications?

Thanks for the info. I did speak with my Dr. and it seems I have 2 choices RAI or the actual surgical removal of my thyroid. He is watching it right now because it seems to be really erratic. I am either totally hyperthyroid or  totallyhypothyroid and it seems to be bouncing around a lot and hard to stabilize. Thankfully during my pregnancy I was pretty consistent and did well with the med. Hopefully things will work out.

I  have just taken RAI yesterday !!!! and my Doc advised me 6/12 months to wait to have a baby......But make sure you are really careful within the first 6 months of having RAI :):):)

You only need to stay away from children for 2 wks after RAI

The usual time period for staying away from children after RAI is 2 weeks.
And usually it is recommended that you do not fall pregnant for at least 12 months after RAI.
As for the last question...that desision is basically on just how well the Doctor can manage your levels.
This is something you should really discuss with your Doc.
All the best and congrats on your baby :o)
