Checking In After My Surgery

I'm home relaxing. The surgery went very well, he only had to do the right lobectomy. The frozen section came back benign but of course we have to wait for the offical pathology reports.

I took the outer bandage off this morning. I only have surgical strips now. It feels a little tight. Parts of my skin around my neck area are numb (gosh I hope that's normal) and of course my neck is somewhat swollen. Oh and my throat is still sore from that darn tube.

Because I was Hypo before the surgery, the surgeon put me on my same dose of Synthroid, he also said I didn't need any calcium supplements but I'm having some tingling in my fingers. Is this a sign of low calcium or just normal after surgery or is it just my imagination?  Maybe anyone who had half removed can let me know their experience after surgery and what I can expect in the days and months ahead.

Congrats on a surgery well-done!  I like to hear froz path reports are benign!!! YEAH .. GREAT NEWS!!!!   Tingling can also affect your lips .. so be aware and do ck with your Dr. if you aren't sure or continue to feel the tingling.

After my partial my calcium was fine and to date still is fine.  However I had a normal TSH before surgery but my other side stopped working so I ended up on synthroid.  it can happen 20% of the time is what I think Dr. Lupo on the other board mentioned when I posted the ? .. I oftentimes wondered if,indeed, this other side could *magically* work again and I be slam-dunked with hormone but my endo said "most likely not" . don't you like the "most likely" disclaimer LOL .... she said it would be gradual, etc.  but to date which is now 14mos ago I am stable on 88mcgs of Synthroid.

Most likely your other side will take over just fine ...

WELCOME HOME!!!!!

The tingling in my fingers is really slight and comes and goes. For years now I have been taking Caltrate and I started back on them today.

When I went for my instructions before the surgery I was told that if I had low calcium they would put me on Tums Ultra 1000. I will wait a few days to see how I feel.

Glad it went well for you.

I too had some numbness and think that is normal.

If your dr didn’t tell you to take calcium it’s probably because your calcium and PTH levels were okay.  That’s really good.  The tingling could be just part of recuperating but it could too signal that your calcium has gone low and you might need supplements.  If the tingling doesn’t subside, gets worse or spreads, call the surgeon right away.

Take care of yourself.

Congrats on the benign results - I'm sure the official pathology will say the same!  I'm glad everything is going well for you. That is wonderful news!

I have heard the tingling in the hands is a sign of low calcium, but I'm not certain. I'm sure someone here can answer that more definitively.
I hope you continue to recuperate well!  =)

I had the right half of my thyroid removed on the 27th of February.  I was not on any hormone pills prior to surgery and currently still not on any meds.  I am still having the thingling but it comes and goes, it kinda feels like my leg/arm/hand jst likes to take naps and fall asleep on me.  I am also still very fatigue, although I am back at work I am still extremly exhausted and sleep at any chance possible (I am home from work by 4 pm and asleep usually not later than 5pm).  I have a follow up with the endo on the 14th of April.  This will be my 6 week follow up appt.  There is going to be bloodwork done to determine if I hypo or normal, so far it seems as though I will end up being hypo.
