Help ! - Sub-Total Thyroidectomy

I had a sub-total thyroidectomy on 3rd Feb (suspicious lump) but turned our to be a hurtle cell neoplasm - whatever that is.  Since then I keep crying, have had two made rages where I smashed the house up.  I sweat at night but don't usually get to sleep until about 4am.  My mood swings are uncontrollable.

I went to the doctors who gave me some anti-depressants (have suffered with depression) dosulepin is the anti-depression prescribed.

I don't even know if this is depression or something related to my sub-total thyroidectomy

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the advice and I am pleased this this behaviour is normal - well if you know what I mean!

Well my GP says they have taken most of my thyroid (all of the left side and most of the right)  There has been no mention on me having any medication with regards to my thyroid nor do I have any follow appointments post surgery.  It's only this forum that has educated me any further.

Just suprised when I went to see my GP she immediately diagnosed as depression.  She doesn't seem to know much about thyroid stuff as she didn't know what Hurthle Cell Neo was.

Hey there..

First I am so sorry to hear that you are having a rough time. If you are new to the board, welcome! I had a TT in March of 2008. Coming up on a year! I had Hurthle Cell Neo as well. Mine was taken out thinking it was cancer and it wasnt.

So... when I had mine out, I was not on any thyroid meds for almost 3 weeks. Your body is going through havoc and should be. First, you had half you thyroid removed, correct? Second, you arent on any meds as of yet correct? Your Dr might be wanting to see if the other half of your thyroid might make up for the other half that was taken.

This does not always work so you know. Most need meds to make up for the other half. The rages and anxiety that you are experiencing are so normal. This is telling me that you need thyroid meds.

Also, get educated on this disease and whatever your Dr gives to you prescription wise.. always ask what its for!! You need to be your own advocate for your health. If you dont, who will?? You will learn this very quickly with this disease.

Call your Dr and ask what the meds are or your pharmacy. I have found that my pharmacist has been better help to me than anyone!!

:)
