Do thyroid Antibodies cause miscarriage

I'm hypothyroid and had a miscarriage at 10 weeks gestation, does anyone know if thyroid antibodies can cause miscarriage and is there anything that can be done to prevent this? Thanks

There are reproductive immunologists who believe that thyroid antibodies are linked to immunological issues that can cause infertility and miscarriages.  Apparently, this opinion isn't shared by a lot of more mainstream doctors, though.

You should check out the book "Is Your Body Baby-Friendly" by Dr. Alan E. Beer, if you'd like to read more about this.

You can also look at the website for the clinic that (the late) Dr. Beer started:

http://www.repro-med.net/

And there is a Yahoo group for these sorts of topics that has a ton of information that you might find useful:

Hope this helps.

I'm not sure about the thyroid antibodies causing a m/c (my assumption is that they only attack the thyroid gland), but if your TSH was high, that could have caused it.  The higher your TSH is over 1.0, the greater chance of not being able to carry the fetus to term.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm not a doctor but if you test positive for thyroid antibodies , you may have an autoimmune issues...which I think can cause miscarriages.  Speak to you OB/GYN...it's a valid, good question.  Jen in NJ
