Dosage question

by karenscar, Oct 24, 2008 04:27PM
Hello.  I am currently taking 100 mg of Synthroid and 2.5 mcg of Cytomel.  I feel ok, but could be better.  My labs are listed below.  This is after 5 weeks on this dose.  Please advise whether you think anything should be "tweeked" or if I should just stay where I am at and give it more time.  Thank you.

TSH  1.24    (.45 - 4.5)
Free T3   3.0  (2.3 - 4.2)
Free T4   .96   (.61 - 1.76)

Personally, I am happy to see that your doctor is testing your Free T3 and Free T4. The lab, however, has the old range for TSH which is sad.
Most people feel better with a TSH on the lower end of the range, and the updated range is more like .3 to 3.
I take 150mcg of unithroid (I did not like synthroid's fillers or colors - they gave me rashes) and 15mcg of cytomel divided into three doses. My situation is that I have Hashimoto's (even after the removal of my thyroid), and had two different types of nodules on each side. I also have a pituitary issue so my TSH is not used for judging my treatment (mine is .0004).
5 weeks is a around the time where your meds should be settled. You may be able to give it a bit more time, but I know I feel better with a lower TSH and higher free numbers. This is my opinion only.

You might consider going up to 5mcg's of Cytomel. Usually the dosage of Cytomel is 5-10% of the T4 dosage and at 2.5 you are taking less than that. Plus, your free t3 has room to move up.  Most feel best with a free t3 over 350.
