FNA in 2 hours..I'm dragging my feet...

Nodule grew from 2.8cm to 3.7cm in one year.  So I'm going in for my second FNA.  I hope it turns out benign.  I'd probably have it surgically removed anyways 'cause I can stand the possibility of u/s and biopsy every 6 months.  But I so hope it's benign so that I can take my time in finding a good surgeon.  The one surgeon I met seemed totally uncaring.  Wouldn't make a recommendation as to whether I should have surgery, whether to have a TT or one lope removal, whatsoever.  My endo is also helpless in that regard.  "it's totally up to you", they said.  Really?  after years of medical school and practice and they want to leave it up to the patient??

p.s. I just joined the forum a couple days ago and I felt the advice I got from this site is much more than I can dig out from my Endo and surgeon.  Thanks everyone!

Got my report.  It seems to indicate benign, but Endo wants to see me next week.  So I'm a little worried :(

What do you guys think?

The valuation is limited by scant follicular epithelial component.  The speciment consists of scattered groups of benigh folliclar cells in a background of abundant pigmented macrophages.  Colloid is scant.  The findings are nonspecific but could be consistent with nodular hyperplasia with cystic degeneration.  Please correlate with clinical and radiological findings.

Mine was classic, easy FNA.  Root canal needle hurt more and so did amniocentesis when pregnant.  I guess I was lucky.  My FNA was atypical and final biopsy after surgery was benign.  I was told 25% of atypical turn into cancer if left in place so that was enough for me to have the partial .. but, I had a ton of opinions.

still "patiently" waiting for my biosy report.  The doctor received the report this morning, but nurse said the doc had to review it before faxing it to me :(

I'm a newbie here so I've been reading the archives a lot.  Regarding TT or Partial, people seem to be dividing right in the middle.  Both sides have some compelling arguement.  If you are interested in reading more, do a search on Total or partial.  I'm not trying to convience you one way or the other, but it's best to find out as much as you could and make the informed decison before going into the OR.

I found the FNA, difficult and painful. My biopsy came back with Hurthle's cell lesion and they could not determine benign or malignant.  So in a couple of weeks I am having my right lobe removed. It has a 2cm nodule. The endo doc recommended total thyroidectomy but the ENT said a right lobe removal would be best.  I do think that recovery would be easier with only half of it gone.  I just want the symtoms of my Hashimoto's and Fibromyalgia to disappear.  Does anyone know if they do?

Yes, after the FNA I had neck pain and soreness around the nodule area. They did, after all, just stick you with a needle! (I can say that, now that it's over. I found the process itself not especially painful, but uncomfortable..).

The good news is, the doc must have drained quite some fluids out, which seems to relieve some of the tightness I've been feeling for weeks, or maybe it was just all in my head?

For those of you who had larger nodules (>3cm), did you have any symtons such as neck pain, sore around the nodule area, etc.?

a] Some nodules are undergoing cystic degenration and become complex cyst as a result;
b] the ruptured blood vessel can lead to rapid nodule size increasing.

Well, it does sound encouraging that there is fluid.  One of mine was so solid he had to stick it 3 times before he could pull anything out of it.  I will say, however, that I had some others that had some fluid and some solid and they were still cancer.  Hopefully yours are just benign cysts.  You are going to be sore for probably 2 days...I was (still am).  Good luck!

Thanks for your well wishes!

Just got back from the FNA.  I was a nevous wreck.  But once the local anthesia is in, I couldn't feel anything.  Now the med is starting to wear off and I'm feeling a little sore :(  The doc said there was quite a lot of cyst (fluid??) in it.  That's a little confusing.  I have always thought my nodule is solid, based on u/s report in Nov07 and June08.  Can a solid nodule turn cystic?  Does it mean it's less chance of cancer?

Should get the biopsy report in 2 days.  Fingers, toes cross...

Good luck on your FNA.  I know the dread you feel...I have had 2 FNA's; the first one required 9 needles and the second required 4.  You will get through it.  Yes, I won't lie, they are not fun but it is doable.  I was not fortunate in that mine are cancer but hopefully you will get better news than I did.  Sending positive thoughts....
