Hurthle cell neoplasm result for my FNAB

I am a 32 year old female. All the women on my mother's side have thyroid disease, mostly hyper so they had some thyroid treatment and ended up hypo thyroid.

5 years ago my PCP found a small nodule on my thyroid upon routine examination. She sent me for ultrasound and the report came back that I had a benign 5mm nodule. Thyroid blood work is normal. Need to check back from time to time...

Stupidly I never followed up again. Recently I touched my neck for some reason. I felt a mass. Had an ultrasound a few weeks ago, 1 right side 25 mm nodule now present. Just had a FNAB last week and the results came back Hurthle Cell Neoplasm and my PCP does not know what that is so she today referred me to an ENT/surgeon. I I found a post you responded to that said:

Only about 15%-20% of Hurthle lesions are cancer.

Are these my odds? I presume I will have surgery soon the ENT will advise and from there they will be able to analyze the tissues more. I read that chemo and radiation are not effective on Hurthle cells? That they spread easily?

Any feedback you could give me would be appreciated. My thyroid bloodwork is still normal.

Thank you so much.

I just ran across your post - don't how I missed it before.

I'm so happy to hear that your nodule was not malignant and that you still have 1/2 your thyroid.  I hope it works for you, so you don't have to go on medication, but do keep a close watch on your levels (TSH, Free T3 and Free T4) to make sure they remain adequate.

Best to you.

I had the surgery 5/25 and founf out today that the nodule ended up being Hurthle cell Adenoma and there was no malignancy. I still have half a thyroid and may or may not need pills. Will be tested in 6 weeks.

Just an FYI in case anyone ever found my original post and was scared of their FNAB Hurthle cell results being cancer like I was.

I was very lucky as others will be too!
