Ok Thank you I will do that! Wow I didn't know any off that! My doctor is an endocrinologist, I guess I shouldn't have assumed that he would know to check all that.
The main reason he took me off of the 50 mcg was symptom related, I think. I started to feel sick, dizzy and in a daze.
Oh and I also have a hypoechoic nodule, but they said that it is really small and it shows no signs of growth.
You might want to go ahead and do a "walk in" and try to get the TSH, FT3 and FT4 (best if done at the same time), so we can see what's really going on. Judging from the tests being run, your doctor is not real "up" on current thyroid testing/treatment; additionally, some doctors get pretty testy when you tell them you learned something online; others are willing to learn and work with the patient.
While you're trying to get more tests, you should also ask for tests to determine whether or not you have thyroid antibodies, because if you do, your hypothyroidism will get worse as time goes on and you'll need to do regular med adjustments. The antibody tests you should get are Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOab) and Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TGab). These will determine if you have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune disease, in which the body sees the thyroid as foreign and produces antibodies to attack and destroy it. As the destruction progresses, your thyroid will produce less and less hormones, until eventually, it produces none and you will be totally dependent on the replacement hormones. Hashimoto's is the #1 cause of hypothyroidism in the U.S; most of us who post here regularly, have it.
Why were you decreased from 50 to 25 mcg? Was your doctor going only by TSH?
Really, wow. I'm still trying to get use to this thyroid stuff. I just found out I had it a year ago. I think I could ask him, I don't have a appointment until August but I can do a walk in with this doctor. When I first found out last April I started off with levothyroxine .25mcg then I took .50mcg for about a month then was brought back down to .25mcg, but of brand only synthroid. 3 Days after my appointment I started getting all the symptoms back, started with depression and anxiety and sometimes I feel hungry but I cant eat and low energy.
Your TSH is on the high side of normal, but your T4 is slightly above mid range, though since that's total, we don't know how much is actually free to be converted to T3 for use by the cells. Do you think you could get your doctor to do Free T3 and Free T4?
With TSH of 2.820, you could easily have symptoms of hypothyroidism, though TSH is an "indicator" at best. What thyroid medication(s)/dosage(s) are you on, and how long have you been on them?
The reference range for the Total T4 is is, 4.0-11.0
Nearly all the tests your doctor is doing are outdated. You need to be getting TSH, Free T3 and Free T4. What is the reference range for the Total T4?
My recent lab from 02/14/2012
T3 UPTAKE-23.0
TOTAL T4-7.6
T7 calculated-1.7
TSH-2.527
And then th lab before that on 09/13/2011
T3 UPTAKE-20.0
TOTAL T4-8.9
T7 calculated-1.8
TSH-2.820
Many people report having symptoms even WITHIN the reference ranges because the ranges are far too broad.
In fact many people do not feel symptom relief until their Free T4 is in the middle of the range if not slightly higher AND their Free T3's are in the UPPER 1/3 of the range.
So even being within range is NOT an indication that you won't need medication in order to relieve symptoms. Despite what the Dr's tell you.
Yes, levels don't have to be very far off before symptoms occur (they don't have to be out of reference range).
Please post recent labs along with reference ranges (these vary lab to lab and have to come from your own lab report) and we can take a look and see if there's anything that jumps out at us.
