I have a few questions

I recently saw my Dr. for a regular visit and I mentioned my hair loss and exhaustion. He looked at my last blood test and said my TSH was in the normal low range. 1.62 I think. He wants me to get all 3 blood tests for my thyroid. I have every symptom of hypothyroid. What can I expect if my blood work comes back and my thyroid is low? Should I work with my family dr. or see an Endo for this. Will I have to get blood work done on a regular basis? And is Synthroid the first med of choice? I would also like to know from any of you that have your levels in order if you feel much better. I'm so tired, having problems losing weight, my hair is falling out by the handfulls. Thanks for any info in advance. Remar

Thank you for your fast responce to my questions. My Dr. said my THS is in the low normal range and that's why he wants to test it again along with FT3 and T4. He also mentioned that my calcium levels were in the high normal range. No, I have'nt had my iron and B levels checked that I know of. I'll have to find my last blood test paperwork and look. I had'nt thought about that. Can low iron and B levels cause all the same symptoms of hypothyroidism? So are you saying that depending on what may be low with my thyroid, I could be taking a different med than synthroid? Sorry for all of the questions but this is so confusing for me.

Hi,

if your TSH is normal, but the FT3 and FT4 are low your dr may start you on a low dose of T4 hormone.  Or if he is wholistic he may consider starting you on a low dose of T4 with monitoring to make sure you don't go hyper to see if it helps your symptoms.

If taking T4 hormone then you would need regular monitoring of thyroid levels.

However, your symptoms may be from something other than thyroid.  Have you been checked for iron and vit b levels?  Have they done a general check to look for any other cause?

Hope this helps
