I'm kinda of concerned...

I am 16 and recently I went to the doctor, lets say probably over a month ago... b.c I was having pretty bad anxiety and I wanted to get something done about it.

Well the doctor was going to put me on a small dose of Zoloft to help... but she wanted me to take a blood test before getting put on the medicine.

I got a call from the doctor a few days later and she told my mom that my blood tests came back and I had an underactive thyroid.  So she made out a prescription for me to take a small dose of hypothyroid medicine (Levothyroxin - generic for Synthroid).  I have to take one pill that is 25MCG every morning after I wake up and cannot eat for an hour after I take it.

Well after I found out about it the day my doctor called...  I immediately went online and looked up underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)  and I seen that I had been having some of the symptoms it listed.  But the symptoms are so small that I figure it wasn't anything serious.

Before finding out about my underactive thyroid I had gained about 8 lbs and figured it was just from my unhealthy eating and lack of excercise.  But also... just a few months before when I was out of school for the summer I ate unhealthy and didn't have much excercise... and I didn't gain any weight but maybe a couple pounds.

Well after I found out about my thyroid I noticed how my hair is very dry, I feel weak and unengergized at times, I have been having on going skin problems (dryness, acne), I've had mood problems and depression,  intolerance to cold/heat, I was gaining at least a few lbs a week, and overall I just feel like I'm starting puberty all over again.  I use to be 150 lbs and I am now 165 within 2 months.  I did get up to 170 but I have been regulating how much I eat... and I get full very easily so I have lost about 5 lbs luckily.  I honestly don't know if my medicine is working... and my mom got laid off of work not to long ago and lost her health insurance, I did have an apptment though but we forgot about it.

I mean I feel fine overall it's not like I feel sick..  and the symptoms I have aren't that bad.  I'm just hoping this doesn't get worse.  I've seen some people's forums talking about how they don't have periods anymore, where they have no energy, and pain.  I mean I'm only 16 I don't want to end up infertile, weak, and I don't wanna have pain the rest of my life... it scares me.  I have no idea how serious this is.  Ugh... I have early symptoms of hypothyroidism, and I would like to know if maybe taking the right medicine and dose could help beat this.

I use to be 200 lbs and I worked pretty hard to lose 50 lbs about 2 years ago and now I'm starting to gain it back... which is pretty devistating.  I would like to start excercising and go on a diet again, but I'm afraid that since I have an underactive thyroid that it will make it so that it's really hard to lose the weight.

Well I was just wanting to see somebody elses input about all of this.  So if you could give me some advice that'd be great.

You are at the right forum, there are a lot of experienced people here. Also, there is a doctor here to answer your medical question too. From your post, I can tell that you may be just a little to the hypo side. but you need to get a copy of your blood test results. if you can post them here, then we can comment on it and possibly give you some suggestions. Since you are new to this problem. It is very important to keep the history of all your blood test results so that you can refer back to them or show the test results to other doctors if you see a different doctor in the future.  25 mcg is a very small dosage of thyroid supplements. Hypo does cause weight gain. You want to do thyroid blood test at least once every 3 months so you can adjust your supplements to get your blood test results into the normal range.  Your case is very mild,  once your blood test (thyroid function) in the normal range, you should feel better.

Depending on your levals, I would take the meds. It could continue to get worse or maybe not. Did you have antibodies tested? Positive antibodies, with an elevated TSH, would indicate a likelihood of progressing to overt hypothyroidism in the future. At least keep an eye on it, but it soundslike you have some symptoms that could improve with treatment.

I'm impressed that your doctor ordered the test when you presents with anxiety symptoms. I was told that my anxiety was not due to my thyroid. In retrospect, my endocrinologist believes I have been mildly hypothyroid since I was your age. That's not to scare you, but i wish I had been tested when I was younger and had the knowledge you do now.

Hope this helps in your decision. If you don't have insurance, you can check out a health clinic with your mon's approval.

I wish I knew i had a thyroid problem when i was 16. i would suggest taking the meds, it will improve your life a lot (and probably also help you to do better in school). im 26 now, and looking back i realise i had an underactive thyroid for years (although it wasnt too bad till 7years ago).
25mcg seems like a small dose to some people, but i only take 12.5mcg and anymore makes me hyper, and any less makes me feel really hypo to the point where im heaps depressed and get fat and feel really bad and really sleepy!
whatever you do, i suggest excersizing - it was the only thing that made me feel better before i was diagnosed when i was hypothyroid.

Actually we just changed doctors when I went to that apptment.  And I KNOW that if I were to have went to my old doctor about my anxiety he would have just put me on the medicine and never taken a blood test.  And I mean most anti-depressants cause you to gain weight.  So I could have just kept gaining weight and thought it was the medicine.  So I'm am very glad that my doctor had me take a blood test before hand. Now that I look at it she caught it very very early.  I mean I would say she caught it in the very first stages.  Because at that time I had only gained some weight and was just starting to have problems that I didn't even realize I was having.

But yeah I definitely need to get to the doctor soon.  I think I'm gonna have my mom call my doctor to get my blood test results Monday.

I really know nothing about thyroid levels.  I don't understand what any of it means or what is normal.  So if somebody could help me with that, that'd be great.  I mean I've read about it but it's all kinda gibberish.

Another thing...
Around night time it seems almost like my hormones go out of wack and I start feeling really weird, uncomfortbale, and I get really moody.  Last night kinda scared me, and I felt like I was going nuts, as if I was having the equivalent of Menopause lol.  My boyfriend thinks that it's because my medicine starts wearing off at night and then my hormones freak out.  But a lot of the time when I wake up in the morning I look at how I got the night before and it's a blur and I can't believe I acted the way I did.  So I was wondering if this DOES have anything to do with my thyroid... and if there is anything I could do to help it if so.

But I think that I'm going to go with your advice and start excercizing.  I was wondering since you excercized to help you feel better...  did you actually lose weight?  Because I would love to get these 15 lbs back off.  But I guess I'll just have to try it to find out.

Well thanks for everybodies advice I appreciate it.

Once you get the blood test report, post them here. we'll tell you what they are. It is not hard to understand. and make sure you post  the reference range for each number too.  without your blood report it is hard to comment on your symptom, but the 25 mcg Lev you are taking will take at least  one to two weeks to kick in, So, just wait for a few more days, and see what will happen...

Oh okay.. well I've been taking it for like a month.  Each bottle of medication I get has a 30 day supply of pills and I only have 2 pills left.  But yeah I'll post the test results on here as soon as I get them.

The medication stays in your body for several days, so your feelings at night shouldn't be due to it.
Maybe after a little more time on the medication, those feelings will resolve. Is it like anxiety when you say you get moody. Do you sleep well?

Hang in there.

Umm, I dunno.  Maybe it's just cause I'm tired and I get in a weird state of mind?  But by moody I mean my moods will get all over the place.  Like I'll get irritated  and it's really hard to get out of that mood, but yet I won't understand why I feel that way.  Yet I really want to get out of the mood.  And then I'll have hyper spurts.  I mean sometimes I'll just get this really crappy nervous feeling that puts me in a really weird mood, and then I feel uncomfortable.  I dunno.. makes me feel like I'm going nuts.  Maybe it's just anxiety?  I honestly think I have ADD... I've taken 3 online tests and all of them said I should see a doctor about it b.c I scored pretty high.   On one test it said  like 70 and above means you have a high risk of having it and need to see a doctor.  Well I scored 137.  So... it makes me wonder if that's it?

hi,
in relation to your excersizing question... when i wasnt taking thyroxine it was very difficult to lose weight, even with excersize. i managed to lose a little but not much (only like 1kg or maybe 2kg) - and i hardly ate anything - most people thought i was anorexic based on the amount of food i ate - never mind that i never got thinner (and wasnt anorexic looking)! i would lose weight when i had hashimoto attacks though (times when i would go hyperthyroid) - although at these times i was really sick.
i suggested excersizing coz for me, it actually made me hungry - so i wouldnt put on weight, and it made the depression better.
oh yeah since ive been taking thyroxine its heaps easy to lose weight :).

im not sure if your moods are like this but sometimes i find that im angry for no reason, and i dont want to be angry and i shouldnt be but i cant help it. i feel heaps bad for taking it out on the people i love (while im yelling i always find myself yelling "im sorry i cant help it i feel really angry!"). its usually when i have changed my dose and my body is adjusting to it, or if my dose is too high. do you feel your heart racing or get palpitations (when it beats out of time)? (these are hyper symptoms).
i would suggest treating the thyroid and seeing how you feel before adding ADD medication - i know i wouldnt want to take extra drugs if i didnt need them!

the people on this forum are great, they will help explain your results to you. personally, as well as my blood test results, i adjust my dosage on how i feel and my heart rate - its taken a long time but i think ive finally found the best dosage for me. just letting  you know that you can feel good with treatment!
if you have any more questions just ask

It's kinda funny... b.c a lot of people who go on the medication talk about how it makes them hyper, nervous, dif things.  The medicine hasn't really done a thing for me.  I mean I've always had nervous problems, and I know that the medicine isn't causing it.  It hasn't caused me to get rapid heart beats or anything. I don't know if that means it isn't working or not, but blah.  I guess I won't know until I get to the doctor...

But as for the angry thing... yes I do get that way. I get in these irritated angry moods, and I have know idea why I get that way, but I sit there asking myself why I'm like that and telling myself to quit it.  But it's almost impossible to get out of the moods, and then I end up taking it out on the people I love.  But I haven't had any of those weird moods in a couple days.  So I'm glad about that... I've just noticed that I've been a bit more tired and drained then usual.

Also...
I use to easily be able to lose some weight by eating healthier, without much excercise.  Now it's like it doesn't matter whether I eat healthy, barely eat, or eat like a pig.  I still stay at the same weight... lately I've gotten to where I'm just like screw it.  I won't lose weight or gain any either way so what's the point of eating healthy?  So then I just choose junky foods.  But when I eat them I feel abnormally drained and tired.  So that makes me want to eat healthier instead.  I've also been very bloated for the last couple weeks.  I feel like I'm pregnant or something, and it never goes away.  I think it might be the constipation... I'll often go days with out going number 2.  So I thought about having my mom get me laxitives...

My mom should be calling the doctor by tomorrow, so I'll post the blood test results on here then.

hi again!
if you can't lose weight no matter how little you eat you need more medication - it means that the dosage you're on isnt enough. but im not sure what it means if you dont put on or lose weight no matter what you do.... if you overeat do you not eat much for the next few days? or do you overeat for days and not gain weight?

i get really bad bloating and constipation when my dosage isnt high enough. i tried laxatives and they work, but i dont really like them. i suggest eating fresh corn on the cob if you dont like laxatives.

i adjust my dosage myself, checking if i feel hyper or hypo - usually if im hungry or not, or if my heart races or get palpitations or not (rapid heart beat is when the dosage is too high-im always taking my pulse to see if im hyper or hypo). if you do increase your dosage before you see the doc again, i'd suggest doing it  only by a little bit at a time, as taking too much can be dangerous. (i change mine by about 6mcg extra in a week if i need to - i have to cut the tablets and take the extra 6mcg on one day), and ive found a little bit can make a huge difference to me personally, but then im on a really small dose. oh yeah and i wait for about 2 weeks taking the same dosage because the medicine isnt supposed to take affect till then (for me it's exactly 10days - its weird!).

get your mum to read this site if she isnt already, it might help, coz i know that i dont take in all the information. i get so confused when im hypo.

i'll have a look at you're blood tests when you post them, but im not very good with understanding them but i'll try, and probably some other people on here will too!
good luck, and remember you will get better!

how did your blood test results go?
with the dosage adjustment thing, i do it on my own, but its scary sometimes coz its so difficult to know how much you need. when you speak to your doctor best to ask!

well my mom hasn't called the doctor yet...
which is kind of getting on my nerves.  i've asked her several times.
but i guess i'm gonna have to nag the **** out of her.

anyways...
i've been taking 2 pills a day of the levothroxin.  but see... my mom told me i get a month supply and i don't know if the pharmacy will give me more when i'm out in 2 weeks...  so now i'm taking 50 MCG i honestly think i need to take more b.c i don't see a real big difference in 50 MCG...  i do feel better though b.c i was feeling really pooie when i was out of my medicine for a few days and i gained 5 lbs b.c of it.  but since ive had my medicine back i lost 4 lbs.

i read this thing on the internet about thyroid medicine dosing.  and it was a doctor for hypothyroidism that said it usually is based on your weight.  she said it's usually 1 MCG per pound you weigh but it depends if your obese.  so if that were the case i'd be taking between 150-175 MCG.  but there is no way i could try taking more pills at this point b.c i only get 30 pills a month.  i really need to talk to my doctor.

i don't want to get personal...
but i would like to know from some people what their dosage is and if they take about 1 MCG per pound they weigh or if that is even true.

im sorry i didn't realize one of the posts you left. lol

okay about the weight thing.
i seem to still be having problems with the constipation...
but it's not quite as bad.  i took colon stuff that's suppose to work like a laxative.. my mom wanted me to take that b.c she doesn't like over the counter laxatives (she said they aren't very good for you), and the colon stuff is suppose to be natural.  but it did absolutely nothing for me when i took the colon stuff.. i took some tea and it helped a bit.
and excercising does make me feel a lot better.  so thanks for that advice.

okay i know that when i take 25 mg it doesnt seem to do a whole lot, but it is better than not taking it at all.  now 50 mcg like i said is a bit better, but still i don't notice a big difference, i would like to play around with my dosing a bit to see how much it takes me to feel hyper, so that i can see my range.  but it's like i don't even have that option b.c i can't get to the doctor at this time since my mom doesn't have health insurance.  i am so lucky that walmart's pharmacy charges 4 dollars for generic medication though.  so *PHEW* thank god for that.  but i still really need to go to the doctor.. i only have 2 refills i can get.  and i only get a quanity of 30 pills per bottle like i said.  so since i'm taking 2 pills a day im only gonna have a 2 week supply.

but yeah.. wow.  so you cut the pills up??  my pills are sooo teenie tiny id be afraid to cut it lol.  but yeah i mean i could cut it in half b.c it has a slit in the middle though.  hmm...  well im gonna keep taking 50 mcg and give it a while and see if it keeps getting better or stays the same.  but i am SO impatient lol... so i hate waiting.  but i have to learn patience with this kind of thing.

but i appreciate your continuous advice, it helps a lot. thank you

hi!
yeah you should definately get your mum to call the doctor! (or do it yourself if you're up to it).
if you've started losing weight  you probably shouldnt increase your dosage. wait a few weeks and see what happens.
the difference between 25mcg and 50mcg is huge! i wouldnt have increased so much if it was me. if it is affecting you this quickly it could be too much, coz its sposed to take a couple weeks to have any affect. if i was you i'd reduce it and wait and see what happens. make sure you dont feel sick from it - when i took 50mcg i got chest pains and really bad palpitations and really high blood pressure and heart rate. if you take too much it can give you a heart attack - i know someone it happened to their grandmother. if you feel really bad and get chest pains best to go to the hospital.

yeah my pills are tiny too, but i have no option but to cut them - i use a craft knife thing - one of those scalpel things with a really thin blade. i even try and take a sixteenth of a tablet extra one day a week its soooo difficult - but it makes me feel better!
i only take about 12.5mcg/day, by the scale you mentioned i think i'd need 130mcg/day which would definately kill me! although there are people on this forum that take a higher dose than i do.

i adjusted my dosage with the help of my doctor and blood tests, its so much safer. that sux that your mum cant afford it, i hope that you can get some help.

Merry Christmas! I hope you have a great day!

yeah i thought that dosing thing i read on that site sounded kind of ridiculous.

umm... actually, last night when i went to bed i felt all hyper and i kept having heart palpatations and it seemed like my heart was beating a bit too fast, i could hear it beating.  it felt almost like my heart would stop and then THUMP hard and went back to its normal beating.  it did that about 3-4 times.  so that kinda freaked me out...

i've had heart palpatations in the past from my anxiety... if my anxiety got really bad there would be times i'd get them at least a few times a day.  it felt like my heart would get all fluttery like a butterfly and then go back to it's normal beating.. and then sometimes it would feel like it stopped and then make a big thump like it did last night.

so hmm... i'm wondering if my dose is a bit too high.  i think today i'm gonna take a pill and a half.  b.c yeah i would agree since it takes about 2 weeks to take affect i shouldn't have jumped up that much on my dosage.

how was your chrissy?
how you described palpitations - thats exactly what mine feel like when my dose is too high, so yeah you should definately decrease it and see what happens in 2 weeks.

but yeaahh
i took 1 1/2 yesterday and i didn't have any of those problems so i guess i'll let myself adjust to that and see if i start getting complications again or not.  right now i'd be taking like 37.5 mcg.

i was wondering...

okay
i was at 150 for over a year and i'd get on the scale and weigh myself frequently.  well in one day i would go up 3 lbs  go down 4 lbs go up 2 lbs go down 1 lb... and it was just up and down up and down whether i ate or not.  there were times were i was cleaning and busy and hadn't even had anything to eat for the day and i would get on the scale and it said i went up 2-3 lbs from when i had weighed myself earlier that day.  but every single morning i woke up and weighed myself i'd be back down to 150.  i was wondering if that had anything to do with my thyroid?  b.c i mean once i got put on medicine i stayed at a solid weight for a whole entire week and i dont remember ever having that.

but i've been excercising and watching what i eat and what not... and before when i did that i didn't think i had a high enough dose of medicine b.c it just wouldn't come off.  but now i have lost 3 lbs this week since i increased my dose.  so that's kinda why i thought that i should take a bit higher dose.  b.c otherwise it seems to be really hard for me to lose weight and i've never had that hard of a time losing weight before.

but anyways lol.  i just always thought that was weird that my weight would go up and down like that all the time every day, and my friend told me it didn't sound normal.  did you ever have problems like that before you started having an underactive thyroid?

i find my weight goes up and down during the day too!
i thought it must be normal coz ive never asked anyone about it.
although i did mention to my mum one day when i put on like 8lbs in a day or two - and it was exactly 10days after i had decreased my dosage - the day that i went hypo. (my dosage takes exactly 10days to hit me - cant explain it but i notice it!). some of it was fat, but my mum reckoned most of it was water retention (??? i think that means my body storing water).

every day my weight goes up 2-4lbs from morning to night then back down again the next morning, except when im hyper - then it stays the same all day. but i think my weight going up has a lot to do with the medicine making me bloated (and so i get heaps thirsty and drink heaps of water). im reallly allergic to dairy and the only pills i can get here have lactose (dairy) in them.
anyways, i dont think the difference in weight during the day is anything to worry about, as long as its still the same in the morning!
oh yeah i dont know what my weight did before i was hypothyroid, dont think i hardly ever weighed myself then!

yeah its tempting to take more medicine to lose weight, but as i said before, be careful coz too much can give you a heart attack, and it will be easy to lose weight when your dosage is right.
the medicine isnt supposed to affect people until about 2 weeks after they take it (i think it gets stored in the body) - for me its 10days, probably different for everyone. if i get palpitations straight away (or a couple days) after increasing my dose it means its way too much for me. im pretty close to normal now, and changing my medication by a little doesnt affect me at all till 10days later, so yeah, i know its hard, but if i were you i'd wait 2 weeks and see what happens - otherwise you might be really sick for 2 weeks in 2 weeks!! now i only increase/decrease by 3mcg/week to adjust my dosage - but im really sensitive to the medication and dont have much body fat so everyones different. a difference of 12.5mcg/day would be wayyyy too much for me, so i am worried about it being too much for you!

dont forget to ring your doctor, those results are really important - they will tell if you need more medication or not.

hope everythings ok!!

okay..  well i didn't figure it was a huge deal.  but i thought it was kinda weird that before i got this thyroid problem i was always going up and down and up down on the scale every day.  but yeah i would say it's probably water... b.c i use to drink tons of water, and i still do.  it was kinda weird... last night i got on the scale and i gained 5 lbs.  so that kind of got me down.. b.c i had finally lost some.  but since you say that the medicine seems to make you retain water.. i'd say that's what happened.  b.c i drank a big cup of water and i had several green teas yesterday.

yeah i don't really know how much 12.5 mcg more would affect me, i haven't had any problems so far.

since the medicine makes you retain water... would it be okay to possibly take a water pill to regulate that?

but yeah.. i'm going to get up and go tell my mom to call the doc right now.  lol

so i'll get on here and post them once i get them.

i dont know what water pills are, but i asked the doc whether it was bad to drink so much water and they didnt really know, just told me to drink less (which i tried for a day but got dehydrated and just went back to drinking what i was thirsty for), but i find that when my levels get normal i dont need to drink so much and only drink a normal amount.
i dont know if the medicine makes you retain water, it just makes me really bloated coz im allergic to the lactose, which makes me drink more water...
that sux the docs not there today! i hate waiting too...
dont worry about the 5lbs, you'll lose the weight easily when you get right
