Itching

Hi there, I am on my seventh-eighth week of synthroid.  I am doing a lot better and feel great compared to before. However, I recently (last week) started itching all over. It started with my hands and feet and then moved to the rest of my body.  I took some zyrtec and it gets better but comes back. Now it is mainly my scalp and head/face.

Just to say: I HAVE NEVER HAD ALLERGIES OR REACTIONS.  I am 31 and have never had to take allergy meds.  So..........I do not see this being the issue.  I cannot understand where this is coming from.  Even with my thyroid I never have had dry skin or itching. This is totally new.  Any ideas?  I am so itchy!

Is this related to the synthroid. If so.........why so long for the reaction?

Thanks!!

Well you know I am only 31 but I swear I feel like it. I have hot flashes, etc, and have been having a horrible time with my birth control. However, Dr. says that they cannot test since I am taking pills:(

Good thought though!

I’m itchy too!  Just started taking synthroid.  Feels like bugs crawling  under my skin.
You've attached your comments to a very old thread and the previous posters are no longer active on the forum, so you may not get a response.  In order to get more attention for your problem, it would be advantageous if you start a new thread to ask your question.

You can do this by clicking the red "Ask a Question" button at the top of this page.

Please tell us what dose of Synthroid you're taking and for how long you've been taking it. Dry itchy skin is a symptom of hypothyroidism.

Hi there ----mine is red so it has dye (25 dosage). I called my Dr. (who is my brother). He told me to go off for a few days and see if the itch goes away. He says that the itch could be stress or it could be a bad batch of pills. Have you ever heard of that?

Thanks for all your help!

Hmmmm....have you called your doctor yet and let them know this is happening???
Levothyroxine is the brand name I believe....just ask....make sure you tell them no generic though.
Another thought.....what dosage are you taking? Each dosage changes colors and dyes.....maybe you can take the 50mcg tablets that are white? I think its the 50 that are white....if not it is the 25mcg tablets.

Hi there! No, nothing else:(  I feel like I have bugs all over........it is driving me nuts!  Can you tell me the Levo brand?  I may have to switch to that.........it has been a week and this is still going on.  It does go away for a few hours with zyrtec but comes back. It is like pin pricks/bits/itching ---all over head and scalp. My skin on the scalp is irritated.

Thanks for the help!

Hi there! It is possible you may be having a reaction to the fillers in synthroid. Does the itching stay away for the dosage time of zyrtec?
If this is the case, maybe you can ask your dr to switch you to Levo brand and see if you do better on that. Stay away from the generic though.
Is there anything else new that you have consumed or been around?
