I just got RAI a week ago and have no taste buds what so ever... It is totally freaking me out! Not to mention after a certain time at night I get a heaving layer of saliva in my mouth and it taste NOT NORMAL, but it isn't a metallic taste. Really bad cotton mouth in the middle of the night and i have a hard time breathing, is any of this suppose to happen from RAI? Of course the doctors say oh it will go away, I am so frustrated :(
thanks everyone ill pass on your tips
Baking soda and water helps.
About 6 years ago, before I ever heard of thyroid I was experiencing a metalic taste in my mouth. My doctor and dentist had no suggestions as to what could be causing it. It would come and go, and I forgot about it. Oct.2006 after RAI the taste was back continuously and I could not taste food. After 6 months my saliva glands became blocked and would release a salty tasting substance. This went on for several months. I wonder now if that metalic taste from years ago was my thyroid trying to tell me something. Perhaps it was absorbing or storing something, I don't know.

Oh, I feel for your sister.
I just had RAI on Thursday and I am still tasting it, tho not as bad. It is a nauseating taste. I read on one of the boards that some tried swishing their mouth with a mixture of baking soda and water. The thought of that taste gaged me at the time when I was so nauseous, so I never tried it. But she may want to give it a whirl. The only thing that helped me was gum, hard candies, peppermints, butterscotches, eventually all these made me nauseous too. Sips of gingerale or coke gave my mouth a different flavor too. Popsicles were a good diversion as swell. The taste does linger. I'm 6 days out from my 150millicurie dose, but I would say the taste was improved greatly by day 4.
Tell your sis best wishes!

Yes, it's normal. It's one of the joyous side-effects. I had it pretty bad followed by complete loss of taste. It lasted about 2-3 weeks and then everything went back to normal. I just chewed a lot of gum!
