hypothyroidism, missing periods

I am 39 years old and have not had a period since Nov 09.  Thought I was early menopausal, but tests concluded I had hypothyroid disease.  I have been on Synthroid 150mcgs for over 3 months now but my period has not returned.  I have been trying to get pregnant for over a year, but this disease seems to have gotten in the way.  Now that my levels are normal (as of about 1 moth now), I'm wondering if my period wil ever return or if I should start thinking that kids were never meant for me??? Had an appt with the GYN yesterday and he said it is probably due to the medication that I started my period again.  He said to keep an eye on it and if it doesn't return to normal in a couple of months to call him back.  I just started the meds in mid July and go back for more lab work in early Sept.  I am going to ask the dr to check my Free T3 like most people on this forum suggest.

My first labs were:

T4=6.74 (range 5.1-14.1)
T-Uptake-1.11 (range .08-1.3)
FTI=6.0 (range 4.8-12.7)
TSH=4.14 (range 0.27-4.20)
Thyroglobulin ABS=193 (range <60)
Thyro Perox ABS=47 (range <60)

Glad your dr is testing the Frees.  A lot of people here seem to feel better (myself included) when the FT3 is is the upper third.  I wonder if it would help you to tweak it alittle higher than just the middle?  Something to perhaps discuss at next visit.  I know how hard it is to see others pregnant/new babies when you want it too.  I was the same way, very difficult.  Good luck!

That sounds so frustrating, all that up and down!  What are your levels in all the categories, maybe your to far to either side of the range so your periods are not returning normal???  Have you told your doctor, what does he say?

Before I was dx w hashis i was having problems with my period too.  I was having it every 2 weeks or so and the dr put me on a medication to regulate my periods.  After a few months he took me off and I started going longer between periods.  Right before I was dx I went 4 1/2 months without a period and I thought maybe it was early menopause (I am 46). Then I started taking Levo for the hashis and now I am back to every 2 weeks and really heavy.  I hope this is not going to be a regular thing?!?

Thanks for your insigth!  When my doctor discovered my TSH wasn't right, he did an indepth test so we could begin monitoring my FT3 & 4, we started out on 50mcgs and moved up from there until everything was balanced and right in the middle of the range...I go back in 6 months from that last visit to do another ultrasound of my thyroid (2 small lumps were found on the backside the first time...may be nothing, may be something...he wants to see if they change at all) and another indepth test of my levels to make sure that everything is still where we left it in the range...right now I'm just trying to sit back and not worry...it's either going to happen or it's not...I'm charting everyday, watching my cervical fluids and, as I said, just trying to relax...my best friend is due in Nov and my brother/girlfriend had their first child in April...it's hard to have that stuff right infront of your face and be thinking that I may not get to have a family too...

At 37/38 I had the same problem as shuga1109 except mine were about 15 days apart for 3 days.  Just not long enough to sustain anything that did implant.  I was doing the ovulation checker and was ovulating but anything would be flushed out.  After 6 months my doctor started me on Prometrium which extended my cycle, did the dye test through the tubes and next month I was pregnant!  I did not know I was hypothyroid at the time (never tested) and ended up w/ pre-eclampsia and 36 week emergancy induction.  Everything turned out fine luckily.  When my FT3 is too low now my cycle totally stops now.  Your TSH may be in range but I would have my FT3 and FT4 tested as well to make sure they are where they should be. Good luck!

Thanks for writing back!  I appreciate the thoughts...I've been charting my temps for over a year now, but am seeing a different pattern now that I'm on my meds...I thought I had the whole ovulation prediction thing nailed...now it's like starting all over, but without a period???  A couple of days after I posted, I did see some dark color when I wiped and the tiniest bit of clotting...could this be my period returning?!?!?!  I'm charting from there to see if I can find a pattern...Anyway, thanks for the well wishes...we'll see what happens...

Hello.  I understand what you are going through.  I have hypothyroidsm, and I have the opposite effect.  When my levels are off, i get my period every 20-23 days and 9 days long.  Its a pain.  Although I have three children, my two sisters still do not.  They also have hypo and they have tried for years.  One is 34 and the other 38.  Since your level is now normal, check on whether you are ovulating.  check your basal body temperature every day and chart it.  there are free charts online.  This is important.  Also, there are ovulation kits can help you determine whether or not you are ovulating.  Both of these should help some.  Thyroid conditions can affect fertility.  After six months of trying, obgyn's normally begin helping.  family doctors and endocrinologists are not the only doctors that help with thyroid conditions.  Obgyns do also.  They can work together to help you.  I know that my doctor told me they begin helping after six months and still no pregnancy.  Make sure you take your meds faithfully, and on an empty stomach with a huge glass of water.  I have this for many years and know almost everything about it!  I am trying for my last child and I am having a difficult time this time.  My age of almost 36 and this disease plays a factor on getting pregnant.  I just started checking my basal body temp to see if I am ovulating.  Good luck.
