WHAT? You were dx'd with TSH of 41, given 112 mcg of Levoxyl, patted on the head like a good little hypothyorid girl and sent upon your merry way??? With no further appointments scheduled??? What is our healthcare system coming to?
Yes, 41 is high, and yes, of course you should have a follow up appointment scheduled. 4-6 weeks to see if that dosage is correct for you. It may be too high and you could go hyper, again. But it's likely your TSH of 41 will come down to within reference range with this dosage.
But TRUST ME... unless you have extensive dealings with this doc, he is just guessing at your dose of Levoxyl. It's the S.W.A.G. (Sophicated Wild-A$$ Guess) method of medicine every endocrinologist practices. There is no other type. Even the most practiced endocrinologist is really just guessing (albeit a "sophiciatedly" educated guess) at your dosage the first time around. Then waiting for your numbers and verbal report as to how you feel. They of course take your height and weight into consideration, but that's only a starter point. Some docs use this info and start you low, then build. Others just look at your height and weight and give you what they think your body can handle. Either way, you may have some issues, and since everyone's metabolism is quite different and uses these meds differently, they're really just GUESSING.
That said, it's totally irresponsible of your endo to not return your calls. This is something that should be monitored by a endocrinologist. Unless you feel more comfortable in your family docs knowledge of endocrinology, I'd definately call and demand a follow up with the endo or change endos altogether! You need to also have your free T3 & free T4 monitored along with your TSH. The knowledge of how these effect your overall health and recovery is something only an endo generally knows and can help you with.
I was diagnosed changing from hyper to hypo on July 7th. My TSH was 41. I'm assuming that is super high because he put me on 112 mcg of Levoxyl. Should I be tested again after 6 weeks on this amount to see if it's right? How will I know if it's right? I, too, read that it's best to start on a low dosage and gradually increase. My endo still never called me back, so I am having my family dr. monitor me.
I was diagnosed hypo 10 days ago. TSH: 20. Antibodies positive. I'm on Synthroid 50mcg.
It sounds like 100mcg might be a high dose to begin with. You should definitely double check with your doctor,
A TSH of 6.5 is not "super" hypo. You may have symptoms that truely $uck, but 6.5 probably doesn't warrent 100mcgs. 25mcgs would be more appropriate, especially if you've not taken thyroid replacemnt b4. I would deffinately check with the doctor b4 taking that amount of Synthorid.
I'm super hypo (symptom wise) my TSH is only 6.5, I'm just worried about it making me feel worse.
How "hypothyroid? are you? It may be the perfect dose if you're really hypo. I wouldn't take it without calling your doctor first.
