What are some reasons a doctor will not do a FNA?

Just came back from the doctor.  He said the US shows there is a nodule on 1 side of the thyroid, and that it doesn't look like anything we should worry about at all.  He was in a hurry, so I wasn't able to ask all the questions I had, for example, how small is "small" and why a FNA isn't required.  The blood work came back normal.  He kind of had the attitude like YOU'RE FINE, now stop wasting my time and please leave.

On a related note, does anyone know if there are any kind of cosmetic surgery procedures I can get that can get rid of the lump? It makes my neck look kind of big and it's also a bit uncomfortable at times.

Argh! What a painful doctor!
Do yourself a favour and ask the receptionist for a copy of the report of the US, by law you are entitled to it. Also get those lab reports too! Tell them you are making a file in case you move and need to see another doctor, if they get stroppy and say no you can't have them.

Sounds like you have a goitre and the only thing to do, is either thryoid replacement hormone to see if it shrinks or surgery, if it is stangling you and you can't breathe, eat, etc.  BUT having said that you need to know if it is Grave's, Hashimoto's, or just an annoying hypothyroid.

I suspect your doc has not the skill set in understanding nodules and/or thyroid disease.
Just cos he drives a car doesn't mean he knows how to change a tyre!

Now get those results and let us have a look and we as smart patients can help lead you  to the right mechanic! LOL!

Most of us have run into doctors with that very attitude, so we can identify.

Many of us have thyroid nodules and they aren't a cause for concern.  Most of them would not require an FNA.  I have "multiple" nodules and have never required an FNA.  Your ultra sound would indicate if there was something of concern.

"The blood work came back normal" -- can you give us specific tests done, along with results.  Please make sure you include reference ranges used by your lab, since these vary lab to lab, so must come from your own report.  "Normal" for one person is not normal for another, plus, just falling within the reference ranges doesn't mean that's "normal" for you.

If the lump in your throat is a goiter (enlarged/inflamed thyroid), the only way to get rid of it, is to remove the thyroid; but generally, that's not done unless there is cancer, Graves Disease, etc.  No cosmetic surgery available, that I know of.

Some people have "larger than normal" adams apple; are you sure that's not what you are seeing?
