All: Thank you ahead of time.
I have been concerned about my recent TSH result. I was Diagnosed on May 14, 2007 with Autoimmune Thyroid Disease. Following were my initial labs"
Thyroglobulin (0.0-14.4 IU/mL) 37.4
Thyroid Peroxidase (0.0-3.9 IU/mL) 270.7
Free T3 (2.9-4.9pg/mL) 2.8
T3 Uptake (25.0-38.0%) 27.5
TSH .80-5.60 uIL/mL 27.96
Was put on 50mcg Levothyroxine and retested on June 12, 2007. Only Free T4 and TSH were tested this time.
TSH 10.29
FT4 (0.75-1.54 ng/dL) 1.2
Was put on 75 mcg and I retested on July 12, 2007. This time only a TSH was done.
TSH 3.41
My Dr. thought this was fine. I requested an increase. She increased it to 88 mcg and I retested on September 14. This time she tested TSH and FT4 again.
TSH 4.77
FT4 1.54
She again thought this was fine. I requested a dose increase. She increased to 100 mcg and I retested on November 14, 2007. As far as I know, she only tested TSH.
TSH .08
I was beginning to feel great. Many of my hypo symptoms were resolving, and I was feeling very pleased and hopeful about treatment.
However, she said this was too low and decreased my dose back to 88 mcg. I didn't exactly follow her advise. Instead I took 88 mcg 4 days per week and 100 mcgs 3 days, (as I had enough 100s to get me through until another testing.) On January 1, 2008 I retested. She tested my TSH and FT4, but she only told me my FT4 was "normal" not what it was.
She said my TSH was between 12 and 13!!!
I am demoralized and frustrated.
A week or so after I dropped the dose from 100 mcg/day to 4 days@ 88 mcg and 3days@ 100 mcg, I began getting severe hypo sympyoms again. I guess a TSH between 12 and 13 explains that. Yesterday, she increased my dose to 5 days@ 100 mcg and 2days@ 88 mcg.
My questions to you are what in the heck happened to cause such a drastric increase in TSH?
Is a dosage increase of 25 mcg/week likely to effect sufficient re-lowering of my TSH?
What in the heck can I do to get my Dr. to keep my TSH under 1, where I felt the best!
Should I be seeing an Endoctrinologist? Should I ask for a referal from her, which is required by my insurance. Is there something I can bring for her to read that will be short, but which she will respect and not be offended by.
Thank you for any help you can provide.
