Thyroid nodules

Hello!

I just found a lump on the right side of my neck last week and my doctor ordered an ultrasound test.  The next day, I got the test result from my doctor's office saying, I have right-sided goiter/mass anterior neck. Nontender.  And the rest of the result showed that, in the midpole of the right thyroid gland, there is a heterogeneous solid appearing nodule measuring 2.6X1.6X2.2 cm with indistinct border.  A few internal calcifications are noted.  significant internal vascularity also seen.  This nodule is hypervascular and heterogeneous in echotexture with internal calcification.  The "Reading Radiologist" is saying, Ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy of this nodule is recommended to exclude malignancy.

Now, my doctor said, neither there is anything to worry about nor have a concern at all.  My blood work shown (TSH level) normal (1.49).  Well, I am still concern!  What is all these mean and do I really need the FNA biopsy?  I would appreciate it if someone has an answer for this.  Thank you!

That is scary about the doc not reading the 2nd page .. I, too, always get duplicate copies!

Marsha, thank you for your comment, I appreciate it!  And also, welcome to the forum!  It's best to get a copy of your ultrasound test result.  My doctor somehow, missed the second page of the report and didn't see the "reading Radiologist's" strong FNA biopsy suggestion.  Doctors are human too and they can also make a mistake as well, but this one could have taken my life.  Because, I accepted what she told me and was happy to hear that everything was just fine.  Until, my Endo called me for my osteoporosis issue and I mentioned to her that I have a nodule on my thyroid.  Then, she asked me to get a copy of the result and give it to her.  Thank God she did, otherwise, I would have continued to live my life and not knowing I had a cancer.  So, it is very crucial to be proactive.  I wish you all the best and hopefully, yours is not cancer.  My prayers are with you as well :)

Lisa,
Just joined this forum and can relate to your situation. I have nodules and have had the ultrasound. Also went to ENT MD and he will assess in 6 months, stating that "Thyroid cancer is the easiest to treat."  I do not know the contents of the radioligists report so I'm going to obtain a copy....my nodules probably did not present with calcification or vascularity. Take  care and you are in my prayers!

I appreciate all of your comments - Thank you!  Yes, I am reading and researching everything right now but it's so hard to take all this.  After the initial shock was gone, I had a good cry.  However, I am very blessed that I have wonderful friends (no family here and they don't know it yet).  They are always there for me and they take good care of me willingly - always..

Next step is to see a neck and head surgeon at UCSF to determine a surgery date.  It will be a "Total Thyroidectomy".  Losing an organ?  I don't know...  But I am grateful that it's most common and treatable type of cancer.

You all have a great weekend and catch up soon.

This is why it is very important to go with your instinct and not always take the doctor's word. The great thing is that it was caught and something can be done. . Be sure to educate yourself on "living without a thyroid" because it affects every organ in your body and self education is key. God Bless You

And your doctor said there was nothing to worry about. Hmmm. Better to be safe than sorry indeed!

Well, Hello again!  I just got the verdict in today.  It's Pappilary carcinoma.  I am having the total thryroidectomy once the surgeon set a surgery date.  Hopefully soon.  Hope everyone is doing well :)

Hi Everyone, I just had my FNA biopsy yesterday and it went really well.  The doctor planned 4 needles but she found 3 needles enough.  Now, the waiting is hard.  It'll be anywhere from 2-3 days up to a week.  Hope it's not too long of a wait.  I'll keep you posted.  You all have a great day!

Microcalcification in the nodule definitely warrants biopsy consideered the size of the nodule and internal vascularity.

Karen,

I'll pray for you.  I still have to take a copy of my ultrasound test result to my Endocrinologist next week.  Yes, let's keep in touch!

I would follow the radiologist's recommendation. The chance of thyroid cancer is low but it is better to be safe than sorry.
