Vegan after thyroidectomy - should I avoid soy?

Hi,
I have read a lot about soy interfering with the hormone absorption for those with thyroid issues.
But I also read on a few websites that this (eating goitrogenic food) is not a problem for those who had their thyroid removed.
I am trying a vegan lifestyle and I had my thyroid removed, so I am a bit worried, as soy is my nr 1 choice.
I'd be help to hear any tips on this!
Best,
F

I’m sorry your question hasn’t been answered.  From what I’ve read, soy inhibits the absorption of thyroid hormones, whether the hormones are made by the thyroid or taken orally.

That said, there are other goitrogens that inhibit absorption of thyroid hormones and cooking destroys the goitrogenic properties.  I’ve not read that’s the case with soy, but perhaps you could separate your thyroid hormone med(s) from eating soy for a couple of hours and see how it works for you.

If you’re going vegan, I’d strongly suggest you take a vitamin B-12 supplement.  B-12 comes from animal products, such as red meat, eggs, dairy, etc.  B-12 deficiency can have many of the same symptoms as hypothyroidism (fatigue, neuropathy, etc) so you need to make sure you get a good supplement.  I recommend, either, chewable or liquid and make sure it’s Methylcobalamin, which is readily absorbed.

Let us know how it works out for you.
