What Exactly Is A Thyroid Problem?

Lately I have a very rapid heart rate and my Dr. said it could be a thyroid problem so I had some blood work done; I haven't gotten the results back yet though. But I know very little about thyroid problems and I don't even know which thyroid problem to ask about, so I guess I will ask a question in general. What types of thyroid problems are there and what are the symptoms? And if a thyroid problem is present, how is it treated?

Thanks for answering my question! I'm sure if I have a thyroid problem, it is overactive. Now I'll go google Hashimoto's Disease and Grave's Disease cause I'm not sure what they are. Thanks again! :)

Usually if rapid heartbeat it could be overproduction of thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) which can come from autoimmune issues or other. Autoimmune can be Hashimoto's Disease or Grave's Disease.
