it was a post from 2004. So if the person is still with us, he may be in a coma. Maybe he thought he had the whole thing yanked way back then, but maybe they didnt take the whole thing out. I didnt think this was possible so I wanted to toss it out there to see what you guys thought.
I agree that that this is only a partial story. In addition to what goolarra said, it seems that there would have had to be blood work done in order for the doctor to decide the person needs synthroid; and there would be no way of determining a dose, without it. The person would only need blood work every 3 months until levels are stabilized. At age 77, Medicare or Medicaid would pick up the tab if the person is in the US.
You might suggest that this person come to MH and make a post; we'd be much more able to answer her questions and/or get further information.
Something's not right. After a total thyroidectomy, she would have had to be on meds. Perhaps she only had a partial thyroidectomy? The remaining portion of the thyroid can compensate and produce enough hormones. Also, there can be regrowth of thyroid tissue. I'd say that this is only a partial story...
OH sorry it didnt post it properly: this is from yahoo questions:
I had my thyroid gland removed 44 years ago, never took meds,do I have to start taking them now?
