I am new to this forum but 5 years later to these comments, I am having the sistrunk procedure in a couple of months. How bad is the scarring, pain and overall recovery time? I will be missing school so it would be useful to have a good idea.

How is the numbness now? How long did it take to go away if it did?

Thank you!

I just had the sistrunk procedure last August 21st.  The surgery went well.  Just curious to know how long did the swelling around the incision last?  Thanks.

I had the surgery on Tuesday, Aug. 7th 2012.  My throat, mouth and neck were very soar but I'm slowly bouncing back.  The incision (I haven't seen it yet) is still very painful.  I still don"t know how long I'll be off from work due to the extreme heat and dirty environment there.  Any quesions, let me know.

I just had the surgery done on Thursday, August 9, 2012 just yesterday.  I am experiencing pain where I was cut in front of my neck when swallowing.  I am on a clear liquid diet because it hurts when I chew.  Did you have any severe  pain after the surgery?

Hello, I was just diagnosed with a papillary carcinoma of the thyroglossal duct. There does not appear to be a cyst present. I've had a CT scan, a needle biopsy and a thyroid ultrasound. I'm about to have an iodine scan to find any hot spots in my thyroid. It appear I'll have the procedure described here, the sistrunk procedure. I'd like any/all information about the surgery, risk and after care. Please reply here.

Hi, I have an appointment with the ENT tomorrow concerning a possible TDC.  My family physician believes that is what it is.  Padilca, after reading what you wrote, I feel much better as everything I have read indicates the recovery could take 6 weeks.  Right now, it is only the size of a pea.  But, i would think having it removed sooner than later would make it easier to recover.  How large was yours?  How long was your recovery?  Would you say you could return to work within a week?

Hi! I am going through the process of confirming TDC via CT scan this week....what type of surgeon conducted your surgery and had he/she done many prior? I'm kinda freaked out about having my throat slit! Also is it hard to breath through your mouth during recovery?
Thanks

Hi, I'm 21 years old and as of 3 days ago had a sistrunk operation. I was diagnosed with a thyroglossal cyst 4 weeks prior after noticing in pictures that my so called ' double chin ' had got alot larger , although I had not gained any weight . All I can say is that anyone who is concerned or worried needn't be !!! It's absolutely fine and I was right as rain even the day after the op, I have a numb tounge and neck but that's suppose to get better with time. It's alot better than I thought it would be and recovered quite well apart from frustration of not being able to itch it , as it is in an awquard place , just make sure you have lots of pillows to prop up as the back of your neck aches from using those alternicr muscles during recovery . If anybody wants to ask me questions then fire away :-) xx

I had one in 2008 and not to worry you but just make sure you have a good doctor because 2 months after sugery they discovered that it had come back. I'm apparently a 1 in a billion case according to all the specialists I've seen, but still, make sure the person who is doing your surgery can do it in his or her sleep!

Thanks for the welcome ! Still hoping to hear from somone who has had the sistrunk procedure .I am not much of a computer user but really hope I can find some help here.I have two issues going on . First is a thyroglossal duct cyst , a congenital anomoly that in my case has been infected many times and makes me very sick. In the process of getting it diagnosed I also found out that I have Hashimotos thyroditis . Now I am on synthroid and  they found nodules on my thyroid. The surgeon who will be removing the cyst says if it is malignant he will take the thyroid also.I have alot to learn and not much time !

Just wanted to also welcome you and say that I don't know anything about that procedure either.  But I just did a google search on it, and a lot of information came up.  Try that while waiting to see if anyone replies here.

Good luck!
