I had a hemi thyroidectomy done in Jan 2005. During the operation the RLN was cut and though some kind of nerve repair surgery was done immediately, I lost my voice for six months. I have now regained my speaking voice. However, I have had episodes of throat spasm and choking about 6 times in these two years. My throat feels absolutlely dry and not a breath of air goes in during these episodes which last about half a minute. I try to drink plenty of water to keep myself hydrated as we have a very dry climate here. A drop of water going the wrong way, spicy food, anything in the air seem to set off these spasms.
How do I deal with this spasm when it happens? I feel I will collapse and feel completely helpless at the time. How do I prevent a recurrence?
