Edema of ankles or thyroid?

I work 10 hours a day in front of a computer and noticed I had swelling on my left ankle and not my right.  I went to the ER due to a history of blood clots in my family and they found none of those or infections.  My ankle swelling went down but now I have a small "pocket" shaped swelling below my left ankle that hasn't gone away.  It is spongey to the touch and doesn't hurt whatsoever.  I have eleveated and iced it and no help.  I am supposed to go back to my primary doctor next week but i'm concerned what this could be.  I am overweight as well but wonder why it is just my left ankle and not my left.  Could it be thyroid issues as I have many symptoms of that as well???

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
A single ankle can swell in gout, rheumatoid arthritis, deep vein thrombosis (ruled out in your case), trauma, fracture, ligament tear, tendonitis, bursitis or ankle strain. It can also be due to localized infection of the skin above and not be related to the joint. It can also swell if you are putting too much strain on it while sitting.
Since I cannot examine you and know other related conditions you may be having, nor is a detailed history possible on net, I have listed the various possibilities that should be looked into. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral.
Take care!
