Help my 6 yr old son!

My son is 6 yrs old who for the past year has had sudden headachs that lead to vomitting then him sleeping for hours.  If I try to wake him he begins vomitting again.  Hours later he is fine.  His blood work came back with Elevated ESR Westergren, WBC Auto and SEGS Neutrophils NAN at 14.  Docs have no idea.  X-rays of chest were clear as were his nasal passage and ears.  I am scarred this will keep happening.  What could this be or what should we do?  Doc has ordered an MRI and EEG for the end of February.  Not sure we can wait.  HELP.

Absolutely take your son to another doctor and get a second opinion.  There is no excuse for the tests to be so far delayed.  You have every right to get a second opinion.  Is this a regular pediatrician who ordered the tests?  No referral was made to pediatric neurologist?  If you need to, just take your son in through the emergency department at a children's hospital next time it occurs; at any decent children's hospital, this should result in an inpatient admission and prompt testing.  An MRI and likely video EEG would be my guesses in addition to probably wanting to repeat basic labs and possibly do some cardiac workup if indicated (hospitals tend to throw an EKG on for just about anything with altered consciousness, and since he's falling asleep for hours after and vomiting if awakened, it's possible they might want one).

If your insurance does not require a referral, you may be able to contact a pediatric neuro and make an appointment directly yourself.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Yes, MRI of brain (to rule out a tumor or blood vessel problem) and EEG (to rule out epilepsies) are required. Try and push for an early date. Meanwhile consult a migraine specialist to rule out migraines. Take care!
