Leg pains since childhood

Im a 19 year old female and I've been having these pains in my knee since i was about 2 or 3 years old. They dont occurr on a daily basis and they used to happen with more frequency when I was younger but I still have them today. The pain is usually in my right leg around the knee area. It sometimes, but not often, happens to my left leg and sometimes it happens to both. When I get them the pain is really strong. Sometimes I massage the area but that usually doesn't get rid of the pain even though it does alleviate it. When I get these pains I cant describe exactly where it is it's just the knee and around it. The pain is dull, I guess, and most doctors have told me it's been due to growing pains but I stopped growing around 6th grade. When I've had my knee checked they usually don't find anything wrong with it. I'm also an athlete and I can say that the pains are not from excercise because I had them before I started running 6 years ago and they don't tend to happen after exercise.

Any suggestions?

y leg pain began as a toddler.  the pain radiated from the feet up to the knee in both legs. it is terrible pain seemingly coming from the bone or at lest very deep pain.  i could always tell you within 24 hrs. if it was going to rain or if i walked bare footed on grass or a cold floor the pain would start in the arch area of the feet then radiate up to the knee then as a teen the pain would go from the feet to the hips.. the doctors said it was growing pains however it continued all my life and is dibilitating.  i would wrap my legs in an electric blanket and turn on high that was the only thing that helped. i have even passed out from the pain, does anyone outhere have a diagnosis for these symptoms

I have had a similar thing and all checks have always come back normal. I get pain in my knee and then if I don't take painkilles it will radiate down my leg and then up into my hip. A friend of my suggested that it could be from an overly mobile knee cap. When I looked into this it seemed to fit. I only ever notice the pain when I have been using one leg or the other for movement that I don't normally do. It happens most often when I get in and out of the car too often. I think it is from the twisting action. I too was told it was growing pains. As far as I know the treatment is to se a physiotheripist and have your knee strapped and they can show you how to do it your self. Good luck finding an answer.
