Liver problems

I have a friend who has liver failure and lately he's been having the chills, is achy and not feeling.  I am telling him that his body is working harder to keep his liver functions up so that means he is burning more glucose, which leads to a higher temp and lactic acid build up.  He will not believe me.  His doctor seems to be waving it off as a 'normal' reaction but not explaining it.  Could his temp (never over 99) and his achy feeling be something else?

No, he is not being considered for a liver transplant due to the fact that he only gave up drinking about a month ago. There are other issues as well - mostly his liver is on his last leg, the doctor has told him if he drinks he has less than 6 months to live.

Thank you for all of your input!

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
The cause of liver failure is important. If there is occlusion of the common bile duct, then this will also cause fever with chills. Cirrhosis of liver too presents with chills and fever. Liver failure in itself is tough for the body to handle and on and off there are chills and a mild rise of temperature as the body tries to fight for survival. It is a strain on the body.
A new infection causing fever and chills would normally raise the temperature to much higher levels. However there is no harm in talking to your specialist regarding the possibility of an infection causing these symptoms.
The achy feeling is due to weakness, improper digestion, toxins due to liver failure etc. It’s a tough situation needing a liver transplant. Is this being thought of?
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Hi,

Patients with liver failure are more prone to infections than the normal population. An infection could be the cause for the fever, chills, and body aches. Such infections can sometimes present with not much increase in temperature.

That being said, occasional chills are not uncommon in liver failure. This will be mainly because the body cannot very effectively control the body temperature.

The explanation that you have given is not the right one. The body's work cannot keep up the liver's function. Burning of glucose can in no way compensate for the loss in liver function.

You may ask your doctor if he has ruled out infections. Do get back if you have other queries

Regards
