Lump behind the ear

My son has had a lump behind his ear ever since he was a baby. I asked the doctor about it when he was younger and he did not seem concerned. He is 17 now and still has a lump there. Should I be concerned?

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Since the lump has been there for so long, in all probability, it is not dangerous. Such lumps can be lipoma (localized collection of fat), a cyst, a lymph node or a neurofibroma (localized harmless swelling in of nerve and connective tissue). Swollen lymphnodes behind the ears could be due to recurrent chest infection or tonsillitis or pharyngitis, dandruff, or infection of ear.
Do discuss this with your doctor and get your son examined once again (since last time he was very small). Take care!

Hi tiger01,
Both my sons have these lumps behind and which is a little down from the ear. I have had my sons to immunologists and about every doctor you can think of as they were very ill as babies. A specialist told me the lump was due to all the recurrent ear and throat infections they had....and they had plenty. Eventually, they both had 2 sets of tubes and tonsils out, which helped tremendously. The specialist told me it was to be of no concern, unless it continues to grow. The lumps on my boys were about as big as a nickel and felt like a little ball under the skin. So, I hope this helped.
