Pain in the....

I am 48 years old. About 2 1/2 months ago while on vacation I noticed my upper legs began to hurt badly . I had been doing a lot of walking so attributed the pain to that. I also recall that while on the same vacation, I took a step up a flight of stairs and nearly cried in pain and struggled to make my legs work to get to the next level. The pain spread from across my upper outer thighs into my buttocks and still continues. The pain is worse upon standing from a sitting position. Today, again, I tried to climb stairs and had to stop after each step. It was as if my legs/hips didn't physically work any more. Any idea what could cause this?

Pelvic xrays were normal. Would arthritis or nerve entrapment show up on this test?

I have been to my primary care physician (Internal Medicine). He mentioned the possibility of arthritis in the facet joints (I did not say anything to him about nerve entrapment and he didn't mention that to me either...yet). I had a pelvic xray today. My doctor has put me on Naprosyn twice a day for 2 weeks. Thanks for your response. I will report back any news to this forum.

I have a similar problem and it has gotten to the point that I cannot bear any weight in my right leg climbing stair or on any surface that has even the slightest incline.  I have pain in that leg when walking but it is tolerable.  If it is a nerve entrapment, what can be done for it?

Hi,

How are you?
Your symptoms of getting pain when standing from a sitting posture and while climbing stairs indicate the possibility of nerve entrapment in the pelvic region.
Usually the nerve involved is the pudendal nerve. It is usually seen in cyclists or in people whose work involves sitting in one place for long periods.
I would suggest you to consult an orthopedic specialist and get an X ray pelvis or C T scan done. In the meantime you can take mild NSAIDS for pain and apply alternate heat and ice therapy to the affected part.
Keep us posted.
