Painful enlarged gland in my groin

Hi,

I have an extremely painful enlarged lump on the right side of my groin. It hurts to walk, sit down, stand up, basically it hurts to do anything.
I have been to a GP (not my regular GP) and they said it was just an ingrown hair. That kind of makes sense as i had a wax about a month ago. If it is an ingrown hair, its the biggest ingrown i have ever seen.
But, im not convinced. About 5-6 months ago i noticed the glands in my groin (both sides) were enlarged, but not painful. I went to my GP and he said it was nothing, they were probably enlarged because i was bike riding. I went home and thought nothing of them. Some times they would be bigger then smaller, but they would never hurt.
Now all of a sudden, i have this. In exactly the same spot as the gland.
It is hard, red, the size of a 20c coin, goes deep under the skin and is extremely painful. It doesn't appear to have a head (like an ingrown might have).
The doctor has put me on antibiotics, but they haven't seemed to help or reduce the size at all.
Does anybody know what this might be? i need a second opinion.
Many Thanks, Katie

Thanks again, i ended up seeing another doctor who confirmed it was just an ingrown hair. I had a couple of baths which brought a head up on the bump, which eventually popped (ewww!) It was instant relief. Its slowly going away now.
Thank you for your comments. :)

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
The enlarged tender swelling could be a lymphnode. It is very difficult to diagnose the cause of groin lymphnode on net. However there are various possibilities that you can look into. Groin lymph nodes swell up in various conditions, the commonest being infection of the genitals. A viral infection, inguinal hernia, hydrocele, drug reaction, cancer and STD can all cause a swollen lymph node in the groin. Besides HIV, other infections like Chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomonas etc should be looked into—that is you need to get a complete STD panel done. Eczema, dermatitis including sweat dermatitis, and fungal infection like Tinea cruris can also cause a swollen lymphnode in the groin.
Alternatively it could be an abscess, a boil or an infected cyst. I suggest you consult another doctor or the present PCP and get your self examined in these lines.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Thanks guys, i know i should definitely get another opinion and get it GONE!
Twray2005 - i have had ingrowns down there before, ones you can pick at to get the puss out of, but this is extreme! It doesn't have a head to squeeze anything out of. I cant even touch it to squeeze... And i dont want to squeeze in case its a gland or something other then an ingrown.
Thanks Guys, appreciate your comments!

I get those when I wax down there. I treat it like a pimple and it hurts like the dickens, but I get the puss out it and then it goes away. I won't wax anymore in that general area anymore because it hurts so much when I get them. I know it's hard to believe, but because of that area an ingrown hair turns into a puss ball that you just need to expel from your body like you would by popping a pimple. It really hurts, but it's worth it for the end result.
