Once again thank you very much for your reply and for the information contained therein.  The blood in the urine is very much visable and has been happening for quite a few months but only when it appeared in clots did my mother go to the doctors.  My mum is off small built so obesity is not relevant to her so we will have to see what the ultra scan shows.  I just assumed because she had a suspected urine infection when she went doctors 2 weeks ago that had made the liver enlarge,  Now you have explained it to me I can see it is two different medical problems and not linked.  I have read some info on the internet because I was so worried when she said liver was enlarged but could not link in any of the other symptoms because my mum has no pain and no jaundice I did read that asprin can make the liver enzymes elevate and she does take them now and again when she has a headache so could that have done it?

Regards

Hello,

Blood in urine can present in one of two ways: gross hematuria (blood that you can see in the urine), and microscopic hematuria (blood that is only seen when the urine is examined under a microscope). Both types can have serious causes. If your mother is passing blood clots in  the stream, they could represent bleeding from the urethra. Blood throughout urination is most likely from the bladder or kidneys or ureters (the tubes connecting the kidneys and the bladder).

Liver disease is not connected to urine infection. The slightly raised liver enzymes have to be evaluated by means of ultrasound or CT liver.Only then can something be confirmed.Slightly raised liver enzymes can be present in fatty liver also which can be there in obesity also. How ever an ultrasound will confirm whether there is any liver pathology or not.

I hope that helps. Please do keep me posted if you have any additional doubts.Warm regards.

Thank you very much for your reply.  My mother has suffered with blood in her urine for a while now but more like clots than streaks of blood.  She went to the doctors and they said it was a urine infection and was put on anti biotics for that.  She went back two weeks later and they took the bloods and the results were what I posted and they told her she had an enlarged liver and are organising a ultra scan for her in the next few weeks.  She has no pain at all when passing urine and blood not there all the time.  Do you think its just an urine infection which has made the liver enlarged or could it be something else?

Your reply is much appreciated.

Hello,

Well if you could elaborate more on the symptoms that your mother is having then I can try to make a diagnosis. From the reports, there is a borderline hypercholesterolemia and there is mild elevation of the liver enzymes.White blood cells in urine are a common feature of urinary tract infection.I feel that a complete urine examination along with cystoscopy or urine culture can confirm the infection.

The normal ranges for AST and ALT are around 0 to 40 IU/L and 0 to 45 IU/L respectively. So your mother’s liver enzymes are a slight elevated. They are commonly found in alcoholic liver disease, hepatobiliary disease, fatty liver disease and when using certain medications.Pls discuss these possibilities with a physician.

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional queries.
