Okay  I am now down to 5 pills a day started at 8 for 2 weeks then 7 for 2 weeks then 6 for one week now 5 for 1 week and on and on. Talked with nurse she is going to get back with me.
Problems I am having moderate dirreah 5 times a day or more getting thrush in the back of the throat which is from the medicine I am sure.
Why should I still be having upset stomach I thought that the prednisone was working but as my dose has tampered down it has seemed to come back everytime I eat its instant please advise if possible.
Also should I seek a second opinion???????

Hi,

Ulcerative colitis is disease of exacerbations and remissions. Medications to induce remission are as 5-ASA products (e.g., Lialda®, Asacol®, Pentasa®, Dipentum®, etc.) and prednisolone/cyclosporins. The last two medications have more side effects especially on long term usage. Therefore, you need to discuss with your doctor about the possibility of switching your medication to 5-ASA compounds. However it depends upon the severity of your disease.

Management also depends upon the part of the gut which is affected by ulcerative colitis. Left lower side of colon can be treatred with enema or suppositories where as the right side needs systemic (oral ) therapy.

Take care and write in if you need more information.
Regards

Long term use of high dose prednisone is linked to development of malignancies. It is a useful drug, but should be prescribed judiciously and infrequently.

Hi

Prednisolone  is usually given for the management of chronic inflammatory conditions.

One of the side effects of Prednisolone is infection (due to decreased immunity) which could lead to thrush. It can also cause gastritis/ulcers so  I suggest that you consult your doctor for evaluation of symptoms and titration of the dosage.

Let us know if you need more information.

Regards.
