Severe body odor

This is really embarrassing to admit but I am a young female who has been living with a severe body odor for about 8 years now. The smell started when I was in high school and has continued, off and on, till now. I am about to graduate college and would really like this problem cured. I have very good hygeine, I shower or take a bath now twice a day, I wash my hair, brush my teeth and I have tried just about everything to cure this condition. I have tried several deoderants and several home remedies. Unfortunately word has spread about my foul smelling problem and now my classmates prefer not to sit by me at all.
The characteristic of the smell is a musty foul smelling characteristic that seems to mix with whatever I have on my body. It smells like I have been living in a box for 2 weeks. It is often secreeted from my hair, underarms and private parts but it could be also a skin problem.? Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be. This has caused me great pain and no doctors seem to be able to help me. I even got checked for diseases and they have said that I am fine. If anyone could give me any guesses I would greatly appreciate it. It would meen a lot to me because this problem has caused is still emotional painful and stressful.
PS- The odor "in my opinion" is not a fishy odor like the one everyone seems to give advice about.

I am sorry to hear your distress over your situation.  It must not be something to easily live with.  You noted that you've been to see many doctors.  In addition to the medical tests they've done for you have they asked about your diet?  I know that sometimes when people eat strong-smelling foods on a regular basis I notice the smell of the food on the person.  Not on their clothes but their body.  Just a thought.  Do you drink a lot of plain water?  Maybe there are toxins in your system that need flushing?  I'm just guessing.  I do not have a concrete answer for you but I wanted to respond because I do not like to see someone suffer so much.  Write back if you feel led.  In the mean-time...I'll say a prayer for you.

The only thing that comes to mind is that perhaps your calcium levels are low?  I've heard that can cause a foul odor in people.  If your calcium levels are low, one cause may be hypoparathyroidism (try googling that for more symptoms).

Also, try taking warm baths with 2 cups of epsom salt and 1 cup of baking soda mixed in the water (sit in tub for 30 mins).  The epsom salt will pull out toxins and the baking soda will absorb them.  I think this is a cheap/easy solution that may help.

Best wishes!!!

Hi i am new to forum and came across your post.  So sorry to hear about your problems.  i know how frustrating things can be.  I myself been going to doctors for over two years trying to figure out whats wrong with me.  too many sypmtoms plus its your post.  I understand you feel its not the fishy odor people refer to but please look into this.  I saw an episode of Dateline a few months back.  there is much info on the web.  I am trusting my gut here and hoping and believe this just might be it.  from what I remeber its not just a fishy odor.  But very strong smells eminating from the body though it is labeled fish odor.  I rember seeing the women iterviewed and it sounds just like what you have.  There is a blood test that you can take to check for this problem.  If it comes back positvie you have to alter your lifestyle with food.  I wish you so much luck and keep us posted.

here is the name to do a google search with:

Trimethylamineuria

I have just read read the comments and I thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers. I think many of you may be right. I don't drink a lot of  water and I have just started to change my diet to include more fruits and vegetables. I have even just started taking acidophilus.
The symptoms are still there but not as strong. I will check more into this fishy odor smell and the other conditions you all describe.

A musty, moldy odor under the arms may be indicative of a fungus growth.  Fungus can cause a redness or an open wound, or just a bad odor without any visual indications.  At bedtime wash normally and do not apply deodorant.  Instead spread some neosporin cream in the armpit.  It doesn't need to be a heavy application.  Go to bed.  Try going without deodorant for a few days (it's not working anyway)and wash and reapply neosporin whenever you bathe for a few days.  You should smell a result in a day or so.  If this doesn't work, see a dermatologist.  Good luck

i am not sure how to get rid of it but i can give you some advice.  Drug Stores offer over the counter deodarant which are really strong and work really well, i knew a girl who had bad body odor who used it and it stopped.  Also, you can go to a plastic surgeon and ask for botox injections into your arm pits.  This numbs the sweat glands and prevents you from sweating.  It sounds bad to not sweat but there are many other places you can sweat from.  If none of this works, carry around baby wipes and deodarant and go to the washroom every hour and wipe your pits and reapply the deodarant, not a great solution, but it might help.

Sorry  to hear about your rough days.  I have had the many  foul moments in the past 6 month than I've had in my life. I forget who I spoke to about my fecal odor a few weeks ago ( on this website). That person gave me some great info about treament that i like to share with you. I agree with "star queen" it is a fungus, and it is one that has grown.

I have had  slightly sweaty that had a bit of "foot funk" feet since i was about 10 years old. My mom  never thought it was serious. Until i was about 12 I had went for my regular check up with  my primary doctor. She told my mom that i had a fungus in my scalp. she said that my scalp got infected because of me touching my feet that already had a fungus, then itching my scalp. she gave me a Rx called griseofulvin (generic brand).  It works for the scalp, hair, and skin infection. when you have a fungus it can give off very bad odors. that's b/c it has probably spread  and the fungus is now advance ( so   the odor now seeps thorough the sweat glands).  She told me to pre-wash my her with betadine.

Recently, I went to many doctors and they ran many test, could find anything. Then i realize that the odor on my feet had the same odor as before. So i decided go to a clinc and i seen a physcian for $60. She then Rx gris(rx from be4), and econazole for the feet. The differnce bettween the Rx from the doctor and over the counter Rx is, the physcian actually kills the fungus. Over the counter brand only prevents the fungs( it will come back and will have advanced, making it more hard to kill) it can began to build an immunity to the anti-biotics.Every situation is different  so this info may not be for you.I hope this info was helpful to someone, somewhere. Just remember better days will come.

P.S: Good luck clumsy on all future endeavors.

I have the same issue and still haven’t found out what it could be. I came across this post by looking on Google for solutions, desperate to find answers. I know how humiliating, embarrassing and just frustrating this is, and it’s honestly a relief to know I’m not alone in this. It has affected my social life tremendously, stopping me from doing daily things, even to the point I can’t attend school. Hopefully by posting this we will both find some answers and solutions.

Fungus!  Candida/yeast overgrowth inside your gut/intestines can cause this and it is very common.  It can create many other outward symptoms also.  Google candida/yeast.  Of course eliminating sugar and yeast foods, taking probiotics, and anti-fungals (either natural or prescription) will help/stop the problem.

Get your physican write a prescription for PhisoHex, a hexachlorophene anti-bacterial cleanser. On a satrurday, when you have nothing else to do, scrub yourself from head to toe (including your hair) in the morning, and do the same six hours later. This cleanser has mild toxicity and was made prescription when there were deaths from mothrs scrubbing their infants on a daily basis. For an adult, the risk is minimal. Often odor is the result of the by products of a bacterial infection. Phisohex will also eliminate armpit odor, for those with this problem. There is aa good chance (nothing prmised) this will solve your problem.

-I have the same odorous condition, from my research, test done, and holistic schooling this information may help you. The condition is a form of Bromhidrosis wh/ is not just vaginal:
-fungus,parasites,& dysbiosis of bacteria was found through only great smokies labs test I had done and other alternative test . Traditional medical test all came up negative.   Find a Integrative medical doctor. 1) use probiotics daily and digestive enzymes they assist the liver and kindneys function wh/ is to eliminate toxins harmful bacteria also produce.   2) sweet dairy whey to increase good bacteria flora
3) antioxidants 4)alfalfa extract 5)milk thistle extract 6) in place of vitamin pills initially find a Intregrative M.D who is licensed to do intravenous vitamin supplementation 7) essential fatty acids drops daily
8) green food supplementation -find a good homeopathic doctor 8) educate yourself on implant placement of probiotics & whey in colon & look into colonics(colon cleansing) go to I-ACT website for practioners in your area  9) look into ozone therapy, I had injections done by a doctor and then purchased a unit and now ozonate my own water and do my own rectal treatments.  I had the condition for 6yrs. w/ a fungusy smell shooting from my body after I picked up a staph infection in the hospital and a 15yr history of taking antibiotics for acne.  Not one medical doctor helped me, I went to every specialist that exist while smelling horrible, they know what it is but know thy can't control it .  The I.V vitamin supplementation is very important.  At the level of my odorous condition  good diet didn"t  help because I was so far gone so I had to go back to school to learn how to heal myself.  Good Luck

http://www.formulamedical.com/Topics/Symptoms/Odor,%20body.htm This caught my eye especially this part Metabolic disorders
A number of disorders in which the body lacks certain enzymes needed for metabolism of particular proteins cause body odor. In addition, there are likely to be other symptoms, which typically include weakness and slowed growth and development in children. For example, PKU (phenylketonuria), a disorder in which the body is unable to metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine, causes a musty odor in affected infants and children; in fact, this odor is what often prompts parents to seek medical help. Tyrosinemia, an inability to metabolize the amino acid tyrosine, causes a fishy body odor.

I have dealt with body odor since I was young.  I know how frustrating and depressing this condition is because I live w/ it everyday of my life.  Sometimes, its more hurtful because a lot of people are not aware that this is a medical condition, not just because they think we are dirty.  I am a very very clean person, but my body sometimes doesnt act like I am.  I have been to so many doctors and either they dont know what I have or to me it seems like they really dont want to help.  I get so frustrated because I just want help for this and dont seem to be able to find it.  I cant even wear perfumes because they sometimes dont mix well w/ my body chemistry and it hurts because I want to be able to wear tank tops and opened toed shoes and cant because of the odor.  I finally have hopefully found some relief and only because I have been blessed w/ good medical insurance now and they are going to cover the Botox shots, but I have to find something for my feet now because I go thru shoes constantly and I cant afford new shoes all the time.  But, I know how you all feel and I pray that they will find a cure for all of us because we need a cure for this.

Yes this is a body fungus and you must treat both the body and all the clothing, bedding, etc. that you use to eradicate it. The effective treatment is chlorine. This means either a mild bleach solution on the affected body areas when you shower, or frequent hot tubs or swimming pools. Curing it will be a process because the laundry and bedding must be freshly washed with a glub of chlorine in the wash water every time you do the laundry. Towels and washcloths are big culprits. This socially unacceptable condition is very contageous and you can pick it up from intimate contact with someone who has it or even from their bed covers or towels. I have always called it "the hippie funk" because I don't know the correct name of the fungus. A second technique in addition to chlorine is to use Selsun blue medicated shampoo as a body wash. Shave your arm pits and other areas that are affected. Just persevere with the remedies for as long as it takes to return to normal odor. Interestingly, once you have had this condition for a while, you don't really smell it yourself so you must rely on friends to point it out to you and we shouldn't be shy to help somebody out by giving them this information. It is a pesky problem, so watch where you sleep and whose items of clothing you borrow because it will show up on you in just a few days. Clammy funky pits are no fun for anybody and with a little energy and bleach it is good to know that you can clean it up and feel confident once again.

Well I have had much improvement now. Although my issue has affected my current job I have found some remedies that seem to rectify but not eliminate some of my b.o. issues. I now use unscented deoderant, like Sure, on private areas and my feet. I also use Clinical deoderant at night, like the new ones that have came out by Secret and Dove. I also take zinc, since my medication has not worked and I freshen up at work whenever I can. I hope this helps someone else. I will look into the fungus issue. I also know I have hyperhydrosis and anxiety so I try to relax as much as I can. Most of these remedies have helped to mask the odor and hopefully 5 years from now I will have no more issues with it.

I have recently developed this condition and it has been the worst few months of my life.  I smell like mildew and I think theres even more and I just can't smell it or something but I can tell cuz nobody at work comes near me, only my closest friend at work does and I can always see it in his face how uncomfortable he is.  My other friends, whom I've known since middle school are the same way and I want to ask but I'm too embarrassed and I also don't want them to lie to me or tell the truth and then feel guilty and avoid me completely.  My family is the same way and it has gotten to the point that I dont even go out anymore.  I only go to the store at night when it is not crowded, I went out of my way to save money to buy a car since public transportation was a daily humiliation.  I am trying to change my diet but I live in a house where everything is fried and spiced up with onions and all sorts of things and there is never any fruit or vegs to eat.  even when I buy them they disappear within a day and nobody buys anymore.  I'm too embarassed to bring it up to my doctor and I am too embarassed to even sit in the waiting room at the doctor's office.  I want to thank you all for these remedies and I will try each and every one of them at least to reduce it to a tolerable level where I will be comfortable enough to address the issue properly

The first thing to "rule-out" is a persistant systemic bacterial skin infection. This is the "most likely" scenario.

The way to treat this is with a prescripotion soap called Phisohex. Ask your physician. It was withdrawn from the genral market because people were washing babies in the soap and there was at least one fatality due to the toxicity of the bactricidal agent.

For an adult, it should cause no problems. It was used in almost every hospital in the United Strates twenty years ago.

Scrub it in good, with a brush, and rinse thoroughly.

Thenj arrange to go to a sauna. Preferably a "Russian Sauna" if they are around that have a series of hot and wet and hot and dry and ice-water baths to remove toxins from the skin.

Then go back and take a second scrub-down with Phisoxex.

There is a very good chance the bacteria are on your clothing (and shoes), so insure when you put them on you only wear items that can be cleaned by bleach.

Use a bactricidal ointment under your arms.

Hi there, I went to this place a long time ago, I also found an article on abc news entitled: The Model Who Smells Like Dead Fish" - you can read the whole article on the net and make yourself a copy http://abcnews.go.com/Primetime/story?id=2287206&page=3 The article mentions a doctor named : Dr.George Preti of Philadelphia, PA at Monell Chemical Senses Center. I actually went there myself a very long time ago, and he did several tests to find out if I had Trimethylanuria TMA because I had underarm odor problems. I came out negative thought. Anyways, here is their website www.monell.org and you can contact him to schedule an appointment with him and see if u have that problem. If you don't live in Pennsylvania, believe me just take the trip over there, it would be well worth it. The staff is very nice and they will give u some kind of medicine if needed. Well hope u do get the right help:) praying for u too:)

Hi!

The reason why you are suffering from this bad body odur for 8 years since high school may not  be down to  medical problems, sometimes  body  odurs that  cannot be physically  cured maybe given to you by a curse or someone in high school who doesn't like you. It commonly happens. There's someone who lives in  East london been from school has been suffering body odur. Its not her fault, she showers every day  and  does all the right procedures, but  people still scatterfrom her every time they see her. It shouldn't happento her.
Any way I'm just trying to let you know about this product: Mangosteen body soap, look it up on the internet. Or see a Pastor about your  condition.
