Sudden elbow swelling

In the last 30 minutes, a swelling has developed on the outside of my left elbow.

The size is larger than a golf ball, but smaller than a baseball.

It is not sore or tender to the touch, or inflamed looking.

It seems to be filled with fluid, and harder than breast tissue, but softer than bone.

Should I be worried about this?

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!

This is probably the swelling of the bursa of elbow or bursitis. Sudden swelling is the result of a trauma or infection. Infection causes the swelling to become inflamed and tender. Generally following the RICE treatment is enough—Rest the elbow, Ice-apply ice pack, Compress with the help of an elastic bandage and Elevate the elbow above the level of your heart. If this does not help then cortisone injections are given. Surgery to remove the bursa is the last choice. Please consult an orthopedic specialist.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Initially, when without warning or apparent reason, an abnormality burst forth ffull-blown with the might and finality of the simple cleavage of an ordinary atom,I was  thrown into a state of near- shock: what and why was my own body doing to me and what was I supposed to do?
These apppalling unpredictable manifestations of the disease--in quantity,in quality, in probobility, in duration, in sequence, in treatability, in remission and in activity--lie in the very idiosyncratic  nature of the disease. If one is willing to accept what he has been apportioned, he will learn quickly how and when and if to act; more than that, he will be at peace with his condition, and if it has served to strengthen him beyond that, he will be a blessing to others who suffer and seek a kind and kindred hand.
