Swelling leg, ankle pains

My one leg swells up during the day and I get intermittent shooting pains around my ankles that resemble burning.  After a night's rest (if I get any) my leg is normal, but when I begin walking or sitting, the swelling is back.

I went for a doppler scan to determine whether it might be caused by a blood clot, but the scan showed everything is clean.

I do have arthritis as well as a bad back - would that possibly be the cause?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
A single ankle or leg can swell in gout, rheumatoid arthritis, deep vein thrombosis, trauma or ankle strain. It can also be due to localized infection of the skin above and not be related to the joint.  It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. You will need to follow this up with an orthopedic specialist.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
