Swollen left foot can anyone tell me whats wrong?

I have been having problems with my left foot swelling for over a year now.  At first the doctors x-rayed it and came back normal, then I had a ultrasound done to check for blood clots.  Then they diagnosed me with Gout, but tested me for it and it was also negative.  The swelling went away about 4 months ago, but in the last month it has gotten swollen again, very painful.  To describe the pain is like someone stepping on the top of your foot, but never getting off.  Now the swelling seems to be top of foot, toes, ankle and the pain radiates through my leg.  I had another x-ray done last week, still nothing wrong, had blood test done, white count was elevated slightly.  Went to doctors again and was told it was gout, even though now I have numbness in both hands to go with it and the pain not just my foot, but my leg too.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
The most common causes of edema only in one foot are varicose veins and thrombophlebitis (inflammation of the veins) of the deep veins of the legs. These conditions can cause improper pumping of the blood by the veins and venous stasis. Hence when you walk the circulation is more and hence more pooling. This can be diagnosed by color dopplar or an angiogram. Do consult a vascular surgeon for this.
Hope this helps. Do let me know if there is any thing else and keep me posted. Take care!
