celiac

Hi, I was recently diagonesed with celiac at age 39.  I am extremely overweight, so being malnourshid seems odd to me.  I had an endosconpy & biopsy, colonospocy and blood work done that showed the celaic.  I had avery low iron absorption, ( 4 for ferritin w/ norm at 10-291) that is why these tests were done.  I also have hypertension w/o meds the bp is like 180-98.  I am wondering if I could also have a parasite infection, even though I am overweight.  I have been avoiding gluten for almost a month and feel worse and I have foul diarrhea and a very bloated abdomin.  I mentioned it to the dr. (both gp & gastro) but they seem to think not.  Is there another condition I should be looking into.  Symptoms: overweight, high bp, low iron, fatigue, constipation then lots of foul diarrhea.  Any suggetions would be helpful. Thanks

Have you ever had your thyroid levels checked?  It sounds like you may possibly have hypothyroidism.

Hey there -- I too was recently diagnosed. Sorry to hear the gluten free diet is not  helping yet! I went through a transition in mine too. First two weeks, felt GREAT, then the next few weeks I felt terrible... I also have very very low iron - so I'm taking iron pills to correct, which are not pleasant. I bet the diet could help out your hypertension problem. From what I've read & seen online, there is a transistion period - could take up to a year to heal properly. There is a great online forum that I find an excellent resource: http://www.glutenfreeforum.com/

The people on this site seem to know more than the doctors - I would give them a try.

You may have another condition, i'm not sure - i would think your doctors would have seen that at the time of your celiac diagnosis - but I think you need to give the gluten free diet a little more time. Also, you're not getting any hidden gluten are you? No soy sauce, malt flavoring, modified food starch right??? Gluten seems to be everywhere!

It's frustrating & difficult, but it gets better... check out that forum, it's really helped me a ton... let me know how you're feeling!
