Causes of cold intolerance/sensitivity:
Anaemia (iron, vitamin B12, folate)
Hypothyroidism (most cases due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis)
Blood vessel (vascular) problems (eg: Raynaud's phenomenon)
Chronic severe illness
General poor health
Problem with the hypothalamus
Anorexia Nervosa
"A few people who are sensitive to cold have abnormal proteins (called cryoglobulins or cryofibrinogen) in the blood." - Merck Manual
My cold intolerance issues was due to anaemia, hypothyroidism (still treating so i'm still cold), and i have detected cryofibrinogens (said to be a rare finding).
are you sure you know what you're talking about when you say "neurological issues" ?
I don't say that because you're 16, just what you're saying isn't clear at all.
Oh my.
For one, NO ONE is saying she doesn't have a right to wear what she wants. People are saying that it is not "normal" behavior and could very well be indicative of some kind of medical problem.
FYI....a psychiatrist and a PCP are BOTH medical doctors, same degres, different specialty. A psychiatrist gets more schooling to specialize in psychiatry.
Lastly, no one here is "diagnosing". We don't have that capability for a bunch of reasons. Suggestions are being offered.
By the way, my son has a processing disorder of neurological origens--- he does fantastic in school, plays sports, and is well adjusted. He has challenges though that we work on. I know people with tactile dysfunction that wear out of season clothing due to the wrong signals the nervous systems sends. Luck to the poster
I just want to say that I am not diagnosing anyone on med help but rather giving ideas based on experience for the poster to look into.
I hope she finds something useful in this thread. Luck to our poster.
No in-fact this woman is worried about her she works with this woman she knows what she is posting. special mom you need to re evaluate the way you diagnose. Empathy means relation trying to understand how someone feels is the same thing. And a Primary care doctor is not a psychiatrist two different degrees
Um, actually a psychiatrist IS a doctor. And the neurological system IS the nervous system. Empathy means trying to understand with feeling of compassion.
Let us all keep in mind that the poster doesn't know what this woman has really done and she may or may not have gone to a doctor to investigate why she feels cold or chooses to wear cold weather clothing in the heat. I think the poster is just asking for ideas as to what could be going on with her.
Okay A doctor is not the same as a psychiatrist. Special mom you did not say nervous system at first you said neurological issues. And empathy is not the appropriate response you should not relate to the abnormal just accept they are different two different beliefs and meanings
I don't understand what do you mean? she's had a doctor's evaluation therefore her problem is psychiatric?
Please take a moment to read my initial response to the poster. I'm not saying the woman should or should not wear cold weather clothes when it is hot out. I'm giving her a real life reason why some people do this.
And by the way, circulation problems are not 'better' than nervous system issues. Are they?
80 degrees is not even that hot I live in a city where temperatures rise to 110
Re read what I wrote. It can be a neurollogical response that makes her want to wear clothes that do not match the season. It absolutely could be neurologically based. I never told anyone they could or could not wear anything and in fact stated that we should treat anyone with nervous system issues with empathy.
You cannot just assume the worst especially if she is a full functioning adult. You have no right to tell someone they cannot wear certain clothes at certain periods of time.
Neurolical issues could very well be the culprit anonymous.
She's had a doctors evaluation anything you state is speculation.Do not try and worry SeriouslyPuzzled with statements such as Endocrine and Neurological issues. Although Jimarj does have a point with circulation issues. An inner cold sensation would sometimes point out poor circulation.
There is something called tactile dysfunction. This is part of the sensory system. It is a processing disorder and basically people with this have a faulty neurological system. Their nervous system sends wrong messages to the brain. This is when you see kids that are completely inflexible regarding their clothing choices. They have to wear long pants no matter the season as that is what feels best on them due to the faulty neurological system.
I would approach someone that you don't understand their behavior with empathy. It doesn't mean someone is crazy to be different or have things going on that you can't see or understand. Peace to all and using our kind hearts to deal with others is a great goal.
I seriously doubt that someone could convince himself he's cold , dress up like a eskimo in July and not be sweating like a sponge... think about it.
It definitely sounds like she has circulation issues. My dad who recently passed away had terrible circulation in his body and would have the fire on, central heating on, be fully clothed and have a dressing gown on as well. She needs to keep going back to get tests done until they find something. It could also be all in the head where she convinces herself that she is cold.
you're not making a lot of sense. "there are ways of adjusting and adapting" what are they?
when you feel cold do you have alternative ways to adapt other than wearing heavy clothes? moving to Africa?
moreover why does it bother you so much are you sure it's normal?
it could be an Endocrine problem with her or Neurological. Is she very thin? what is her body structure?
There's nothing wrong with her. If she chooses to wear heavy clothes in the middle of July it is her right as an American. You cannot do anything to force her to adjust. If you do you are unjust and have moral issues you should work out yourself. As for your "patient" as long as she is not overheating internally she is fine.
