severe lower back pain with tenderness and pain in the buttocks

I have been having severe lower back pain off and on now with severe tenderness.  I also have pain thats more "sharp"; like something is sticking me, in both of my buttocks. At this point, I am not able to sleep on my back longer than 5 mins, and when I sit or stand for long periods, that makes it worse.  My doctor recommended therapy, which I completed with no relief.  I had an MRI of the lower back, and it came back normal. All xrays were normal also.  No one seems to know what the problem is; the pain is so severe at times, I have to walk in a slight "bent" position.  I have to work, and I don't know what to do.  Can someone recommend anything??

Thanks  for your comment.  Most of my  pain is in left buttock - and spasms run down my left leg down to my knee now and sometimes to right groin area.  My doctor is trying to get me in to Duke Hospital - I am hoping that they will be able to pinpoint what is going on- since 2003- and up to now - I am about the end of my wits.  Good Luck to you too!  Dont give up! You may want to contact the Presbyterian Orthopedic Hospital in Charlotte, NC- I think they do the artificial disc or am told they do!

See if you can have a diskogram done nothing was showing on all my tests also and things just kept progressing had the diskogram and found I blew my disks inside out and that does not really show on a mri bones won't support fusion and we in the us don't do multiple artificial disks.  Good luck

I fell down several hardwood steps and have the same symptoms.  None of the xrays or MRIs have found the definite problem.  I have been told I have piroformis, S1 joint syndrome and damaged sciatic nerve but none of the doctors have confirmed which one it is or if all of them.  Good Luck! Dont give up! Janga
