Paresthesias is the word you are looking for. It's a
numbnessNumbness and tingling in the
extremitiesExtremity arteriography. Usually in the feet but sometimes the hands. There are many, many causes, some of them serious, some of them no big deal.
No big deal causes;
Sleeping on you arm: prolonged pressure on an extremity will make it numb.
Carpal Tunnel Sydrome: I love this because it's a "syndrome". It's a numbness in the hands that is a result of a tendon putting pressure on a large nerve (median nerve). Your family doc can diagnose this and it's an easy fix
Electrolyte imbalances: specifically Calcium can make your skin and muscles do crazy but short lived things.
Hyperventilating: My all time favorite. Most people don't need a doctor for this, they just need a little attention.
Big Deal Causes:
Diabetes.
Arthritis in the neck or Degenerative Disk Disease in the Cervical Spine. Start with a simple X-ray but may need a fancier test called an MRI. This is common and only falls into the Big Deal category because its difficult to treat but not deadly.
Nerve diseases such as ALS (Lou Gherigs Disease), Multiple Sclerosis, etc.
Tumor; primarily originating in the spinal cord or spread to the spinal cord from the prostate or lungs.
Again most of these things turn out to be simple but if its a recurrent problem a work up is necessary.
