Bladder Retention

I had rectocele and cystocele repair on July 6th. I immediately gained 15 lbs and was in the ER twice in the following 4 days. The first time, they gave me more pain meds & an antibiotic for a UTI. The second time they removed almost a gallon of urine that I was retaining (and I immediately lost 8 lbs). I was given a Foley catheter for 4 day....after iti was removed I still can't pee and am self catheterizing. The surgeon said he's never seen this happen with the surgery he performed in 20 years and has no answers, in addition, I feel like he's avoiding me. Any ideas or suggestions on what I could/should do so that I'm not looking at catheterizing for the rest of my life. I am only 45 years old. Any suggestions on specialists I should see? They want me to take Bethanecol?

Sorry to read of your problems.  Urinary retention can occur after for pelvic organ prolapse and your physician should be familiar with this condition or refer you to someone who is. I would suggest you seek a second opinion from a urogynecologist or urologist.  They should be able to evaluate you and treat you appropriately.

Something is not right and your Dr. doesn't know what it is.  Find another uro/gynacologist and get another oppinion.  This is not normal and you need a Dr. who cares enough to do some research and find out why this is happening.  good luck..
