Question about epididymitis

Hello,

About a month ago i started having testicular pain after a sexual encounter i got tested for all std's and they came back negative about a week later the testicle pain got worse and I went to the ER they did an ultrasound for torsion and it came back negative so the ER doctor diagnosed epididymitis and gave me two weeks of doxycycline and a shot of an antibiotic well it's been over two weeks and the pain is still there so i went back to the doctor and he prescribed Keflex 500mg 3x a day my current symptoms are as follows frequent and strong urge to urinate weird sensation in my pelvic area and i've been having chills and just feeling blah, my main questions are is Keflex a good second choice antibiotic to clear up epididymitis i have an apointment with a urologist to basically ask the same questions and further investigation and my second question would be should i go ahead and take the keflex or wait for the urologists opinion since the doc that prescribed keflex was a general practicioner and not a specialist, your input would be much appreciated.

You describe testicular pain but not tenderness (pain with touching). The reason I mention this is that the testis can be a site for referred pain from a ureteral stone or a pinched nerve in your spine or a hernia irritating the ilioinguinal nerve that goes to you testis. These are not situations that will respond to antibiotics. Your symptoms sound very much as though you have a ureteral stone.
I would not expect keflex to work where doxycycline, one of the first choice antibiotics for epididymitus, did not work.
Your urologist will be able to sort things out for you.

Hi,

I have had this numerous times. Each time I was hospitalized and received high dosis of antibiotics through an IV. Maybey they are not treating the infection aggressive enough. Suggest the possibility of being on antibiotics throuhg an IV. Things should clear up in about 2 to 3 weeks. The hospital treatment should only have to be for about 4 to 7 days.

Good luck,

Ron
