Couple of q's regarding my recent diagnosis

Today my doctor said my level is 29 and deficient.

Prescribed me Vitamin D 40000iu daily (2 x 20000iu) for 3 weeks then 20000iu once a week thereafter.
I’m reading posts on here and I’m confused. Is this a large amount? How quickly would I expect to feel a difference? Doc said could be 2-3weeks.

I’m 28yr old fit and healthy/active male, but I suffer from tiredness/fatigue all the time basically.

Hey Deksman2 I am going down to 20000iu once a week now.
Also taking magnesium citrate 100mg 3 times a day everyday

Not heard anything about vit k, only about magnesium.

I don't know how to go about getting retested for my levels, it means half a day off work which I can't afford at the moment. Are there any quicker ways?

Since you were ingesting large doses of Vitamin D per day for 6 weeks in a row (40 000 IU daily - I hope it was D3), then its very possible you managed to raise your levels already to quite good ones.
These doses are equivalent to taking 10 000 IU daily for almost 6 months.

If you will be lowering your D intake to once per week, which dosage will you take?

Also... have you considered about Vitamin K2 as well?
That one goes hand in hand with D (even more so than Magnesium).

When do you plan to retest your Vitamin D levels btw?
I recommend you keep them in the range of about 70 to 100 ng/mL.

Woah great post red_star, thanks for the info.

I've been on the Vitamin D 40000iu daily for 6 weeks now (I carried on as i was on hols for 3 with junk food everyday etc).

I'm now going to go to the once a week vit d and take magnesium everyday 300mg worth and see how I get on.

It could be a co-incidence but I did find an article by Dr Carolyn Dean: When Magnesium Makes Me Worse. It's a very long article so I just posted a few sentences of each point. You can google the article to read in more detail. RDA is 350mg of elemental magnesium. My supplement is magnesium chelated with amino acids and it states 500mg but in each capsule is 100mg of elemental magnesium. Make sure it's elemental.

1. You’re not taking enough: When people feel worse with magnesium, I believe that the 700-800 enzyme systems that require magnesium just get jump-started and They Want More!

2. You’re taking too much: You can also feel worse on magnesium if you take too much, too soon. This usually happens if you have (adrenal) fatigue and weakness from magnesium deficiency.

3. You have low blood pressure from long-standing magnesium deficiency and adrenal fatigue. You may have heard that magnesium can lower your BP so you worry about that happening when your BP is already low.

4. You’re on heart medications and as your health conditions improve, your meds are becoming “toxic.” That’s because you may not require them anymore!

5. You’re on fluoridated medications that bind up your magnesium and make you deficient even when you’re taking magnesium.

6. You’ve started taking iodine (in doses above the RDA) that speeds up your metabolism giving you heart palpitations that has nothing to do with magnesium deficiency.

7. You’re taking too much Vitamin D: Here’s what happens. You feel great on your magnesium and then you begin to have more magnesium deficiency symptoms after adding a high-dose Vitamin D supplement.

8. You are taking too much calcium and it’s pushing out your magnesium: Read Why I Hate Calcium to understand why the most prescribed mineral is actually dangerous because it’s causing heart disease in women.

9. You’re taking magnesium and becoming dehydrated because you don’t take any other trace minerals.

10. Magnesium is getting into your cells and detoxifying chemicals and heavy metals. Sometimes this can feel like a healing reaction. The symptoms can be an increase in muscle pain, joint pain and even skin rashes. That’s why I recommend that you build up your dosage of magnesium slowly as the cells detoxify and are finally able to work efficiently.

11. You have IBS or you are very toxic and even ReMag gives you symptoms. IBS is a gut sensitivity of the lining of the gut, specifically the smooth muscles of the gut wall.

12. You’re taking a magnesium glutamate or aspartate. I warn against taking these forms of magnesium in my blog Glutamates in Magnesium Chelates.

With regards to magnesium, I have bought 100mg magnesium citrate, the good stuff as the guide you linked says.

I took one earlier today and im shattered....I dont know if its a co-incidence?

How much should i take the RDA is around 350mg, so taking 3 x 100mg would be enough along with my vit d3?

I had bone pain in my hands from vitamin D deficiency. Make sure you take enough magnesium so you can absorb vitamin D.

I have had headaches and numerous other issues for 13.5 years daily.  I was tested for Vitamin D finally and started taking 50,000iu's once a week per my doctors prescription.  I have been on it two weeks today but have been noticing a few things that I wondered if anyone else had experienced?
I have gotten real emotional in the last 5 days or so to the point of crying for no reason.  I have had some pain in my fingers and hands that I didn't have before.  
Has anyone else had this happen to them?  I'm wondering about the emotional issues.
I'm so happy I found this sight.  If I find out that this helps, I will be posting all the symptoms that I have had suffered with for years.  So many are the same as others have lived thru too.

Update:

I took them for 3 weeks as prescribed and felt a difference. I felt sharper and generally just better.

I was on holiday in USA at this time, eating junk food everyday and when I stopped taking the double dose everyday, I felt a crash. I'm aware the junk food/holiday may have caused this.

Started double dosing again and have continued to do so, about 4weeks on the tablets now.

First day back in work, jetlagged, will continue to take them for rest of the week then wondering what to do.

Should I ring the doc and tell him what I'm doing? I know high levels can be toxic.

I feel the difference overnight taking 3000 IU of vitamin D.  The mucus that builds up is gone in days.

Magnesium is depleted for various reasons including dark soft drinks like coke, sugary foods, stress both mental and physical, coffee, tea, alcohol, medications like diuretic, heart medication, asthma medication, birth control pills to name a few reasons.  In my case I had severe magnesium deficiency due to insulin resistance, stress from surgery and vitamin D supplements.

It might be possible that a sudden supplemental infusion could produce some mild changes after just 48 hours.
And while some people will be less sensitive to the changes, others can notice them more readily... but a placebo effect is not excluded.

Remember that you've been taking 40 000 IU daily, while most people might take up to 20 000 IU daily (usually less).

Regarding Magnesium... you can get enough of it from diet alone.
Almonds, raw green vegetables and dairy products such as cottage cheese and pro-biotic yogurts have high concentrations of Magnesium (with Almonds having highest levels).

Though, depending on where you live, supplements might be a more cost-effective way of getting magnesium.

Magnesium acetate form seems to be the best one in terms of the body actually using the mineral in question, so I would suggest focusing on that when tracking down supplements - but as I said, I think the best way of getting Magnesium would be from Almonds, leafy greens (raw), cottage cheese and pro-biotic yogurts.

Yes I've been prescribed vitamin D3.

I'm curious about the magnesium. Is it worth me ringing my doctor again to try and get some or is there a dosage and brand (in UK based) that is recommended?

I felt like it already started to work ever so slightly with my mood being slightly improved. Placebo effect as its only been 2 days?

Your Vitamin D levels while low, shouldn't really take too long to stabilize in 'very good' range.
I hope you were prescribed Vitamin D3 though (and not D2).

Consider that the human skin can generate approximately 20 000 IU after 25 to 30 mins in the summer sun between 10am and 3pm, and 10 000 IU after 15 mins... so no, I don't think the amounts you are taking are 'too large'.

You cannot really overdose on Vitamin D3.
If you were taking D2 however, I would be slightly worried since D2 is a synthetic version which can be potentially toxic at high levels.
The body will convert D2 into D3, but the gains will be small since D2 is far less potent.

On that note, I would also make sure that I'm taking in the correct amounts of Magnesium as well (since its a crucial component in terms of body producing and using Vitamin D in general).
You can make sure that you don't fall off the Magnesium bandwagon by eating say almonds (which are rich in Magnesium) as well as perhaps yogurts and cottage cheese.

I had a vitamin D level of 30 nmol/L (12 ng/mL) and it took 2 years to get my vitamin D levels up as I didn't know at the time I had magnesium deficiency causing vitamin D resistance plus taking 5000 IU daily of vitamin D just worsened my existing magnesium deficiency. Vitamin D requires and uses magnesium to convert from supplements or sun into its active form in the blood so you need magnesium in good supply.

The official daily upper tolerable limit for vitamin D is listed at 4000 IU.  Vitamin D toxicity is likely if you take 40,000 IU daily for three months or 300,000 IU in 24 hours.
