Impossible to loose weight - no matter what i do!

Hi All,

Im seriously struggling to get anywhere with my weight issues and im now at a loss as what to do, im either doing something seriously wrong, or im not realising that there could be something else going on.

Let me give you a quick history - Struggled with being overweight when i was younger, but didnt really take much notice, as it was only a stone or two overweight.  Later years managed to get to 19st - although i never looked that heavy.

I didnt drink, eat excessivley, ate healthily so couldnt figure out where all the excess weight was coming from.

I eneded up doing the usual of not eating properly for a few years - only ate 1 meal a day for a good while, but as i never feel hungry it didnt really bother me that much.

About 18 months ago, the weight started to creep up and up - although nothing had changed so i decided to go see the doctor as i coulndt figure it out.  They did all the normal tests which came up normal, and i was sent to the local dietician.  To say she was rubbish is an understatement - after keeping a food diary for months, she just told me that i shouldnt be putting on weight, and as i dont look huge anyway whats the problem.....kind of made me laugh a bit.

So went back to the doctor and got refferred to the hospital for further investigations - they did all of their scans and tests which all came back negative.  So the "Professor" after asking my wife if she came down in the morning to find the fridge empty, i got the impression that he wasnt really that interested.  So he sent me to see the hospital dietician.

Now this is where things got interesting. I explained what i had been going through and she took the time to explain and actually beleived me when i told her that i wasnt eating - and she asked me to make the effort to eat three meals a day and see how it went.

Fast forward to me doing the three meals a day, calorie counting to 1600 cals, and getting down to 101KG.  This is it i thought!......

Anyway over the past 6 months, everything has been the same, been eating 1600 calories a day - three meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner - all healthy stuff as well, dont drink, dont smoke, dont drink full sugar fizzy drinks (its mainly water and pepsi max) and its going back up again!!!

Its went to 101 to 104, then to 106, then to 107 and now in the space of a week, im up to 110.  Im at the point of dispair and giving up completely!!!

I tell the doctors im eating 1600 cals and the weight's going on and they just look at me and effectivley call me a liar...

Im not inactive, i walk, bike and jog, and its still going up!

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Or any words of wisdom would be appreciated....

Thanks

Yes -- this happened to me!!  I was always tiny (5' tall and around 100 - 105 lbs) and all of a sudden about 3 yrs ago, my weight began increasing by leaps and bounds.  I ended up putting on right at 30 lbs in less than 3 months.  My doctor kept telling me I just need to "push away from the table" and "MOVE MORE".

Several months later, I asked (begged, actually) for a thyroid test because of other symptoms I was having also.  Sure enough, I was suffering from hypothyroidism; later determined to Hashimoto's thyroiditis.  I was put on med and while I still struggle with my weight, my thyroid levels are at a point that I can lose weight if I work at it.

You might also want to get checked for insulin resistance or Type II diabetes, which can also cause weight gain/inability to lose.

If you decide to get your thyroid checked, insist on the following tests: TSH, FREE T3, FREE T4.  You might also want to check out the Thyroid Disorders Community, here on MH; there's a ton of information that might be helpful.
