Sunday Weigh in April 9, 2023

Good afternoon... I hope everyone is having a lovely day.  It's kind of chilly and windy here today, but not horrible.  I had another unfortunate week and I'm beginning to feel like an accident looking for a place to happen!!

On Wednesday, my neighbor and I were out for our morning walk.  I tripped on a rubber mat that had been placed at a crosswalk but wasn't secured in place.  We were just walking along chatting, next thing I knew, the ground was coming up to say "hello".   Neighbor was walking beside me and she said I went airborne before I splatted on the ground.   Anyway I fell on my left side, so bruised my knee and side.  I think my head hit the concrete as well and my glasses went flying.  Neighbor convinced me I should call my husband.  I think I was a bit dazed and thought I could get up and walk home!  Anyway, I did call husband and he came to the location with the intention of bringing me home, but after neighbor told him what happened, he decided the 911 was in order, so I earned myself a ride in an ambulance.

Since my head hit "something", they did a CT on mt brain, along with x-rays on my chest,  neck/shoulder, elbow that had a huge lump, my left knee that had a bad scrape and my wrist, which was pretty swollen and very painful.   Other than my usual craziness, my head was fine  ;-), as was everything else (other than the bruises), except the wrist, which is broken.  They put me in a splint and sent me home with instructions to see an ortho doctor in 3-5 days.

I tried to call the hand specialist I've been (trying) to deal eith for the pain in my hands, but of course, they didn't answer the phone, nor did they return my call.  I waited 24 hrs for a return call and when I didn't hear back, I called the Ortho place I'd gone to when I broke my foot a couple of years ago.  They "do" answer the phone and I got an appointment for tomorrow.  I'm assuming I'll get the splint off and be put into some sort of cast or brace.  I'm also assuming that arm will have to be immobilized for several weeks.  I do have soreness in my ribs when I take a deep breath and of course, my hand hurts, but it's the same type of pain I was having from the arthritis rather than what I'd expect a break to feel like.  In addition, it only hurts when I move in certain ways, which was the way it was before the fall.

Of course this would have to happen just as I'm making plans for a sibling get together the first part of June.  Hopefully, I'll be out of cast/brace by then, but only time will tell.  I'm certainly no spring chicken anymore, so don't heal as quickly as I used to.

Anyway, I only missed of morning walks this week, so I thought that was pretty good.  I did weigh this morning and I'm up a little more than 0.5 lb.  I do have the splint that covers my arm from mid fingers to elbow, so I'm sure that's part of the weight.   So I'll claim 0.5 lb gain for this week and hope I can do better next week.

That's my drama for this week.  How has your week been?  Income tax time is creeping up on us, so I hope you're all done with that.  Ours were done in Feb and I'm glad I don't have to worry about that along with everything else.

I hope you had a great week and look forward to hearing about it.

~~Wishing everyone a wonderful, successful week~~

The Willamette River, which since it is a big river, the herons are safe in their rookery.  Here's the link (delete the spaces): https: // west linn oregon . gov / parks rec / maddax - woods  If that gets deleted by the software, look at Google maps, West Linn, Oregon. The park is called Maddax Woods, and if you notice, the whole island for the rookery is colored green since it's a refuge. If you go to the Parks & Rec website for Maddax Woods, and click on the first picture on its site, it will show you the rookery. It's a good time of year to see the birds in their nests because the trees aren't leafed out yet. There you see 27 cups up in the trees, with those big birds in some.

Wow, Barb, that's awful! I'm glad you were able to reach a doctor who would listen!  When I broke my elbow, I couldn't even type on my computer, since the cast immobilized my arm in an L shape, so I'm amazed you were even able to get on here and explain what happened.

I didn't weigh yet today, we had activities that kind of swept me up until I realized I'd eaten a big meal. I try to keep all my weighing-in at the same time of day before eating, so they will be comparable. Will check in the morning.  I did weigh on Thursday, and was the same as last time, give or take .2 of a pound.

My husband has been waiting to get in to see the doctor about his eyes. He usually updates his exam and buys glasses at Costco, but last time he was there, the optometrist said he had become eligible for cataract surgery; he was 20/40 or worse in both eyes. So we went to our HMO, and waited forever for an appointment with their eye clinic. He finally did get examined last week, they sent him for this and that (it took two hours, no 15-minute hustling him through). Then the doc said, "You do qualify for cataract surgery, the Costco optometrist was correct. We're backed up for these surgeries for at least 8 weeks" [looked at the schedule online] "...but if you can take a cancellation, an opening just popped up for tomorrow." My husband grabbed it, and I therefore spent half the day on the 7th driving him to one of their locations 45 minutes away and waiting in the waiting area while he had BOTH eyes done. It was like an hour and 15 minutes for him waiting in pre-op, then 15 minutes per eye for the surgery, and out he comes. He was blurry but not in pain, and has to wear dark sunglasses with guards on the sides for a while, but he can already see much better even though it's only been two days. He said his peripheral vision is back, which he admits was gone long ago. He can read street signs, and see other notable things much more clearly. I'm glad it happened so fast, it's better not to have a long lead time to sit and worry! And his night vision when driving was getting almost unsafe. What an amazing surgery.

My son and I tromped around some of the local parks here that we haven't visited before. It's rainy and very mild today, and in the tall trees you don't get too wet. It was almost poetic, lots of mosses and ferns and some river views (and one park was at the river's edge). These are parks in the town we moved to last year, that we haven't seen before. One has an overview of a great blue heron rookery, 27 nests and several birds flying around. It's on an island in the middle of the river but the park (on the shore) looks right at the nests. That was really nice, and all in all a good thing to do on Easter.

Have a good week, or as best as you can, Barb!  I'll be thinking of you and hoping your doctor gets you patched right up.

Well, when you've been brought in yo the ER on the ambulance, they sort of have to listen.   :-)  My arm isn't totally immobilized, since it's my wrist that's broken instead of the elbow (though the elbow has quite a bruise, as well).  Fortunately, they x-rayed everywhere I indicated pain and a couple places I didn't indicate pain!!  :-)  It's my wrist that's broken, so they only have that, completely immobilized.  The splint goes "to" my elbow, but doesn't cover it.  They said they wanted me to be able to move my elbow and shoulder, so they wouldn't "freeze".  I've had both shoulders frozen, so I know what that feels like and never want to experience it again.

All that said, I can move my arm at the shoulder and bend/straighten the elbow.  The splint goes to the base of my fingers, so I can move them. as well.  The break is near the base of my thumb, so, although I can move my thumb. I don't have enough dexterity to use it for typing.   Since it's the left wrist that's broken, my right hand is intact.  I can type normally, with my right hand and am "hen-pecking" with the left since my fingers don't have much freedom to move.   Fortunately, I'm pretty good at hen-pecking, so can still type fairly well even though it takes a long time.   :-)

I'm glad your husband was able to get his cataracts taken care of.  Why did it take so long to get an appointment?  How lucky that an appointment popped up for the next day.  I'd have grabbed it, too, since the wait was that long.  I'm really surprised they allowed him to get them both on the same day.  Mine had to be 2 weeks apart per the eye doctor.  I'm glad he' had no pain - I didn't either - and that he's able to see better already.  I had severe astigmatism that I had corrected at the same time and I, now have 20/20 distance vision in both eyes.  I do still wear glasses for close up sight.  I don't have to wear them all the time, but I do because I refuse to carry reading glasses or have to say "oh, I can't see that because I don't have my glasses".  I've worn glasses since I was 16 yrs old, so I have no problem wearing them at this stage of my life.  lol   So I suppose you're having to do a few types of drops in his eyes a couple times/day?  I had, either 3 or 4 different drops to put into each eye, twice/day for a month   They even gave me a little calendar to keep track of it all.

I have to go back in July to get film removed from my eyes - it causes "halos" around lights at night.  It sounds pretty common.  It's a laser process that takes a few minutes/eye.

It's awesome to think of what they can do with our eyes.  Too bad they can't figure better ways to treat macular degeneration.  I have a sister that's blind in one eye from it and doesn't see real well with the other eye.

Oh your park trips sound like fun.  Unfortunately, we don't have much in the line of parks in my neighborhood, but there are some in the county, if we're willing to drive to them.  It's fun to ramble around in parks and watch the birds, etc.  The rookery sounds awesome.  "It's on an island in the middle of the river"  What river?  I'd love to see something like that.

Have a good week.  :-)
