It is very state dependent.  My state does only allow through the first trimester in a clinic and after that point, it is surgical in a hospital and a whole different matter.  It is done after the 13 week point due to medical reasons given by the patients Ob/gyn  only.

The law states a doctor can preform an abortion unless the baby is viable outside the womb. What the article I read said was that most doctors considered 23/24 weeks viable.

Yes, there are states that allow up to 20.

I do think it would be really hard for any fetus to survive at 20 weeks but I guess a rare miracle could occur.  Most women that go into premature labor that early lose their babies which is so sad.  My friend feels it was a miracle that her boys lived at 23 weeks.  the doctors told them there would be little chance.  They prepared them for the babies dying.  My friend and her husband asked that no super measures be taken but that if the babies were trying to breath, that oxygen be given.  The boys did indeed try to breath.  And it went from there. They were in the NICU for 6 months each and both had various issues.  But they are alive and well today.  Blessings and miracles!  I'm a believer!!

Hi there.  Every state is different and it always depends on the legislature of a particular state.  Some states do have legal abortion to 20 weeks and some allow through the first trimester only.  So, it would depend where you are at.

Sadly, a 20 week fetus is not viable.  I believe the earliest a fetus has lived was at 22 weeks.  We have dear friends that gave birth to twins at 23 weeks.  Those boys are now 10 and doing fine.  They have had issues along the way with various surgeries to correct things and one has some executive function issues but overall, both boys are doing fantastic.  They are very good buddies to my kids!
