First Prenatal Appt.

Hey ladies, I called the Dr and have an appt scheduled for the 16th of March. What should I expect from my first prenatal visit?  I know every Dr is different so if you ladies could tell me about your first appts I would appreciate it very much.  I just want to know what to expect when I go in and not be shocked! Thanks! Love Jen

GTT--I had the Orange and the COLA. Stay away from the COLA!! I also had to have the LONG one with my first. And the Doc had me eat several Hershey bars the night before, then go in and drink the Syrup. Pee in a cup, blood draw, wait.. Pe oin a cup, blood draw, wait.. I was like a pin cusion by the end of the day, which really didn't bother me but I just can't handle drinking liquid sugar. So fo rthose that have a weak stomache, just hold on for dear life and TRY to hold it down. I was at the Lab for some blood work a few months ago and there was poor girl in there who got through til just before her last blood draw when she lost her cookies. She was in tears when they told her she would have to come back tomorrow and do it ALL over.
Good Luck!

It has been different with each pg it seems. My first appt with this peanut was a week ago, I went in, tinkled in a cup, they did my b/p, went over my hx, figured my edd, and sent me for my labs. I go in on March 13th for my first u/s.

With the rest of my pgs, they did all of the above and then did a complete exam (PAP, Pelvic, breast exam, etc.) I just had a pap in Nov, so they won't do one again as it isn't necessary.

I expect that my next appt with include the physical exam, the first one was more of a meet and greet type of thing, new doc. I have to admit, it was nice to get to meet and talk with my doc before he starts putting his hands all over. : )

Why did you hate the glucose tolerance test?  I'm going in for that on April 11th and am a little curious about what's bad about it.  From what they've told me, you just drink some liquid in the morning before you eat and then they check your blood sugar level an hour later....is there more to it than what they are telling me...?

I hated the glucose test too. They do make you drink some stuff, and its like drinking orange flavored pancake syrup. It is sickeningly sweet. And, if the test comes back weird you get to do it all again.

I stayed so sick with both of my prenancies, that I threw the stuff up!!  Then, you have to start all over again.  Its just really, really sweet.  Good luck!

Thanks, I guess it's just another wonderful test you subject yourself to during pregnancy.  Something to look forward to I guess (sarcasm)...thanks again

The above post is right.  You'll walk in, pee in a cup, they'll weigh you, take your blood pressure, and ask lots of questions about family history and when your LMP was.  Also, depending on how far along you are, they might go ahead and take blood samples to determine blood type, hormone levels, etc.  They actually did that one when I was 7 weeks pregnant, so they may choose to do that now with you.  It is so much fun going in for the first time and hearing the doctor talk about your little bun in the oven, I bet you can't wait until they do the ultrasounds!  Good luck and have fun!

The gluecose test sucked from my point of view. I had to drink this orange stuff like orange pop but way worse.. super sugary then the night before I couldn't eat anything so that made it worse for me cause I was so hungry being pergo and all.. Then they draw your blood and you have to wait forever it seems like. Remember to keep it down.. Do not throw up or you start completely over from the beginning and you have to drink that nasty stuff again.. I dont know if there going to make you fast the night before but it was so hard for me. I wish you luck.

I thought the orange drink was pretty good.  But I'm a big fan of sweets!  :-)

maybe it wouldn't be so bad if it tasted like chocolate!

They did the "fun" vaginal US (ask for a picture!) to confirm the due date, pap smear, breast exam... I think we talked about family history as well (illnesses, possible disorders). Got a lot of reading material we also got the first time. (I think the first time around she even went over those folders). And we chatted. Fun visit. I think they automatically sign you up for coupons and samples because they suddenly just start coming in the mail.
Because I had gestational diabetes the first time I also got the glucose test (otherwise my dr. does it at about 24-28 weeks). You have the orange and the white one. The white one tastes like sprite (it isn't really a lot sweeter than sprite if you check the labels 50 mg vs 45 for a regular soda). I agree if you do the three hour, it is way worse, but then they give you 100mg and you can't even get a glass of water afterwards to get rid of the taste.

i had my first prenatal apt. two weeks ago. They took a urine sample, did an exam, figured my due date, and asked lots of questions, then they went over billing for the entire pregnancy, and sent me home with a ton of prenatal vitamin samples.

Now I haven't had a baby in over 10 years, but back then, we had to give a urine sample, and got a fingerstick (Every visit). And on the first they may draw blood, do an internal exam, maybe a PAP, and feel of your tummy. The normal weight, height, history of you and immediate family. Breast exam, and they will try to answer all of your questions. You might have an U/S (depends on doc) and hopefully they'll give you a goody bag with prenatal samples, and baby gifts like tiny bottles of baby powder and soap with coupons for everything from baby doapers to formula. I actually recieved a case of formula delivered to my door about a week before I delivered my 3rd. I breastfed, but it was nice to have it on hand.
i really loved my doctor visits. Finding out how much my babies had grown and hearing their little heartbeats. The blood draws and such were no biggie to me but can be to others.
Ypu will have to have a Glucose Tolerance Test probably in your 2nd or third trimester. That was the worst part of all the visits in my opinion.
I know I am forgetting TONS of stuff, so hopefully everyone else will be able to pick up where I left off and think of more things to prepare you for.
Good luck, have FUN, and Congratulations!
