Pregnancy and Alcohol

I am a moderate drinker and trying to get pregnant.  I have gotten conflicting advice.  Some people say no alcohol at all and others say it's no problem to have a couple drinks once in a while.  Does anyone know how much is "safe"?   And before or right before you might find out you are pregnant, is this the worst time to drink anything?  Should I be driving myself crazy about drinking this past week?

The thought of taking a drink while I was TTC and PG never occurred to me. Baby was all I thought about.

while i agree w/ most of these posts "you shouldnt drink while ttc" its also a matter of what kind of drinking you are talking about.  We tried to conceive for 7mths before we got our BFP and I had a beer or a glass of wine w/ dinner maybe once a week.  Talk w/ your obgyn, they can give you the best advice.  good luck

My best friend had a drink every once in a while she was pregnant and smoked weed for the first 3 months and her baby came out perfect.  and he is soooooo smart!!  He just turned 2 and knows his address and phone number and can spell his name. I dont see how it would be a problem if you had a drink every once in a while just not everyday.

I agree with mslkpage, I also obstained having a drink from ovulation until AF. If you are actively TTC, maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to cut it out completely so it isn't a drastic shock to the system when you get pregnant.

I would never advocate drinking even a drop while pregnant. No one knows how much is too much, so actively drinking while you know you are pregnant falls into the irresponsible category, but having a few drinks and not knowing is vastly different. Someone always knows someone who did such and such while pg and their baby turned out "fine" but many of the issues associated with fetal alcohol syndrome and the lesser form, fetal alcohol effect may not present until later in childhood. Same with smoking, tobacco/marijuana/crack whatever, the effects may not be seen for years to come.

You made a great first step by coming on here and asking. If you feel your need for alcohol exceeds a social drink now and then, address that before TTC. And if possible, try obstaining from it at the very least during the last 2 weeks of your cycle.

Good luck, may you be blessed with a happy and healthy pregnancy.

while having a beer or a glass of wine while TTC isn't going to mark you as a horrible person, you SHOULD keep in mind that the first 3 months ARE crucial...a lot of people don't find out they are pg until after aboubt 4-6 wks, or even more. If you were out drinking and getting drunk every weekened, that's a lot of alchohol  to be giving a tiny baby. if you're not ready to stop drinking, then don't TTC. but, like another poster said...you are not on here to get a lecture. so in reality...a few drinks aren't going to prevent you from getting pregnant...but those few drinks might prevent you from having a healthy baby...you might m/c, or you may have a baby with FAS...and imagine looking at that little baby and knowing that you could have prevented all the hardship that they will go through in their life by not drinking for a few months.

yeah it all depends on what is moderate.. if you are talking about a glass of wine everyday with dinner.. then i dont see that as a problem at first.. BUT
I am TTC and i am even reducing my caffine/diet soda intake.  I am especially careful in my 2ww.   I miscarried at 10 weeks for an unknown reason.  If it was because there was something wrong with my baby, then  maybe cutting out the harmful things wont be so bad.

Also, if you are TTC make sure to take your prenatal vitamins every day!! Ive been taking them since 11/05

As long as you are drinking in moderation, there should be no problem.  As someone above said, take your prenatals, excercise and just take care of yourself.  Alcohol is not evil if you are responsible with it.

You are not a bad person for having a drink now and then.

Good luck.  I hope you are able to conceive soon.

I agree with baby4staci. Just use common sense, and I would abstain from alcohol from ovulation until AF (or + hpt).

There's no need in calling her "irresponsible," or "selfish" for asking a question. At least she's thinking ahead.

If you are trying to conceive then you should treat your body as if you are ALREADY pregnant.  Such as eating healthy, no smoking, no drinking, etc.

There is a difference between drinking and then finding out that you're pregnant... Then there is when you ARE TRYING to get pregnant, and you continue to drink.
Most people have unexpected pregnancies, and they do things they shouldnt... but when you're trying for a baby and you dont change that lifestyle then it's being irresponsible.
Everyone knows that the first 3 months are crucial, anything can happen. It's just flat out wrong to put a baby that you wanted in jeopardy, because you want to get drunk.
If you had NO CLUE you were pregnant, and 'oops, late period!' Then that's a WHOLE and COMPLETE different story. But KNOWING and even ASKING how much is okay to drink when TTC, there's a problem. If you really want a baby, and trying for it, then alcohol shouldnt even be in your mind.. 'drinking moderately' shouldnt even be in the same ball park when your trying for a baby.

she came for advice not a lecture some people seriously have no clue and in a majority of cases people dont no there pregnant while there drinking i never found out with my first untill i was 10 weeks 4 days because i had the implanon implant therefor causing my periods to be irregular i was drinking.
my baby came out nearly 9 pounds the doctor was showing my placenta around the room saying this is one of the healthiest ive seen in 35 years of practice im not saying it is ok to drink while pregnant cause its not but if it happens we have to try not to stress i havent had a drink for 18 months now after i found out about my first as i become pregnant while i was breast feeding my 3 month old and am currently nearly 30 weeks again i dont miss alchol at all especially when it comes to the health of my babies good luck.

The more I thought about this question, the more I thought that you must be kidding....
If you are trying to conceive it is totally irresponsible for you to even think about drinking. It's very selfish to put your good time infront of a baby's weather it's unborn, or born.
If you had no clue that you were pregnant, and you drank, then there is nothing you can do about that, just hope that everything can be okay. But if you want a baby, and you're continuing to smoke, drink, or whatever then that's just wrong. You're not showing your dedication, and you're not showing concern for that babies life either.
Once that stick turns blue, that is it, your good times will have to be put on hold for the sake of another life that you're 100% responsible of. If you did continue to drink, and hope for the next pregnancy test to turn blue, and you miscarry a week or two later... Then wouldnt you feel horrible? Knowing that you WANTED this, and you could have prevented it?
The first 3 months of pregnancy are very crucial, you can lose the baby for any number of reasons, and by continuing to drink, KNOWING that you asked for this, you're just begging for something to happen.
I'd think twice either about having that next drink, or think twice about wanting a baby.
The two dont mix very well, and can have potentially dangerous problems.

If you're trying to conceive, then it's best to stay clear from the alcohol just incase. I drank 'moderately' (if that's the WORD for it)... up until I found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks.
It's always best to stay away from alcohol when you're pregnant, or trying to conceive.. Because you NEVER KNOW what can happen.
Some women drink a bottle of wine a night and their babies come out fine... Some women drink a bottle of wine and their babies have AFS...
Whatever you consume, your baby consumes too.
